Anna Mae was born in Buffalo, New York back in 1920. After she graduated from high school she enrolled at General Hospital School of Nursing graduating in 1941. She joined the Army Nurse Corps in 1942 where she was sent to eh China Burma India Theater. She was stationed in India for the duration of WWII.
At the end of the war she stated in the Corps, where she also served during the Korean War. Rising through the ranks she earned her Master of Science in Nursing degree. She was promoted to chief of the Army Nurse Corps in 1967 and stayed there until her retirement in 1971.
For her service, she was awarded the Legion of Merit twice. WWII Victory Medal, Asiatic-Pacific Campaign Medal, Army of Occupation Medal, and several others. As far as I can find out she is still alive and doing well at 97, sorry I do not know where she is living. Of course, I’m writing bout Anna Mae Hays. One more thing she is the first woman in the U.S. Armed Forces to be promoted to a general officer rank. She retired as a Brigadier General. Remember to keep a smile on your face, a penny in your pocket. You’ll be richer than most people on the planet.
