Rose of Sharon is a popular shrub in Kentlands, our home community within the City of Gaithersburg, Maryland. The name may be confusing to some because this is not a rose and these are not rose bushes. Rose of Sharon, Hibiscus syriacus, is a flowering shrub that can reach the height of a small tree. They have a long summertime blooming period. By the way, cuttings can be used in vase arrangements. This is the national flower of South Korea.

Subhash Sharma  "Despite it's confusing name this 'Rose of Sharon' looks quite exquisite. While this name has been applied to several different species of flowering plants in different parts of the world in the US this name has been to Hibiscus syriacus. Varying scholars have suggested that the biblical 'Rose of Sharon' may be one of plants which include a Crocus, Tulip, Lilium or a daffodil (Narcissus). However taking this as a flower of white hibiscus the message conveyed by this 'Rose of Sharon' would the symbol of divinity, innocence, purity and royal beauty. A breath-taking plant that will surely blow anyone’s mind away!"

Mr. Sharma is a Facebook friend from India. He now lives in Dublin, Ireland and frequently comments on my photographs as I post them on Facebook.

I have a couple pots that have Rose of Sharon in them.  I've been looking for a place in my garden to plant them, but can't find one.  I may need to give them to a neighbor.  I have always loved them though.

I enjoyed reading this just now! It was very interesting & brought up a funny memory for me from my first home purchase. My husband & I were newly married & purchased a small starter home where our neighbor's house was very close by. We proceeded to have a fence installed to allow our little dachshunds to run around. Because our neighbor was bad about letting weeds grow right through our fence, my young husband thought they must need help with mowing. So he mowed both sides of the fence. Imagine our surprise when we got a knock on the door the next day & were told he had mowed down a young Rose of Sharon that they had just planted. A clipping of a recently deceased great aunt of theirs! Luckily they sold their house that 1stbsummer & we got new neighbors who took care of their own weeds!!
