Woman in loveDear Google Docs & Spreadsheets,

You were a stranger to me just a few months ago, but in the short time we've been together I've grown very fond of you.  In fact, I can't imagine my life without you now, and I'm glad that my personal email account with Google binds you to me at no charge.

I may not have mentioned this before, but right before I met you I became a blogger.  Before you, I worked with another named Word who wasn't as user-friendly for cutting and pasting blogs.  His spacing was a little weird, though I would never tell him that to his face.  With you, I can keep track of article ideas and rough drafts and know that the autosave feature is working all the time.  I can also flesh out the idea at any time, insert the links here instead of after the article is pasted to my blogging platform, and access all this information from any computer with internet access.  You are the most accommodating platform I have ever used.   I can find you from any computer with internet access.

Your collaboration tool is great for working with other people on articles and projects outside my company, and I recommend you to my clients to store text for marketing, website content, and brainstorming ideas.  It is a great way to keep track of ideas as they come, and it is an even better tool for collaborating on those ideas.

Because of all these features I have been a fan of yours for some time, but it wasn't until I erased a finished blog that I came to appreciate your  true value.  As I was inserting a link, I accidentally erased the entire text of my blog and then immediately saw the "saving" button in red at the top of the screen.  Did my love of the autosave prove to be my downfall?  Is the blank version now the final version?  No, of course not.  All I had to do was go to the Revisions tab, click on a version a few seconds older, and all my work was there.  You have no idea what this meant to me.

So even though I continue to use Excel instead of your Spreadsheet version, and even though I use another platform for internal collaboration projects, I wanted you to know how much you've come to mean to me as a blogger in such a short time.  I hope you aren't the shy type, since I plan to tell everyone I know how much I love you.

Thanks for being there for me, Google Docs and Spreadsheets.

Love,

Betsy

Betsy, very nice!  I, too, was introduced to GD&S a month or so ago, coincidentally right after I started blogging.  I think he's been seeing other chicks.  I love him too!  Fun post.  Thanks.

I've heard of Google Docs & Spreadsheets, but have not yet used them.  They sound awesome.  Since I already have a Google account, I'll check them out.  Thanks for the info!

Hey Betsy!   Love your writing--I read all (skim?) your posts.   I just signed into GD&S to write my first blog yesterday but didn't know how to format text around my picture.   Arrrg!  Somehow I managed but it took way too long.  Oh well, at least I got started.

Dale, if you're a skimmer I'm betting you're a D! :)  Thanks for stopping by.  As for pictures in blogs, I add mine once I post into AR, then I save it as a draft so I can view it and make any adjustments, and then I post it as public.  Jeff Belonger wrote a good post regarding this today and also references a great post by Kristal Kraft on inserting pictures into your posts.  I'm copying Jeff's blog link here for your convenience.  Good luck!

TLW, this is hysterical!  I have been playing with it for 15 minutes when I should have been working....

Maggie, you'll have to click on TLW's link to see Google's competition for my affection.  He's a little hairy, but very cute!

It seems Google is taking over the world! My real estate company, BrioRealty, uses Google Docs/Spreadsheets for real time collaboration on our production spreadsheets in our few offices that are on opposite ends of the country.

Thanks for the link Betsy.   Actually I did read that blog tip of Jeff's but I just didn't know how to apply it.  Now after reading Karen's tip I think I have it.

I wonder if I can go bakc and edit my blog post safely and do it right?

Hey Betsy, thanks for keeping us all informed. I already have the account and the tools but haven't really used them before. I'm guessing I'm going to have to start now that you've got me thinking about using it for blogging! Thanks again!

Hey Betsy,

I have been putting a piece together for my next post (on Oil Tanks) using Google Docs.  I'm stumped on how to get the article into the blog though...any tips?   How are you doing it?

By the way, I was able to go back into my welcome post and get the text to wrap around the image.  Yea!

This sounds wonderful-is it relatively easy to use, even for the technically challenged who don't love reading directions?

I lost a lengthy comment the other night, and thought I'd die-you can't believe what I went through trying to retrieve it, with no luck.

I use the Google desktop and love it-helps me easily find docs, emails, whatever, so easily.

Thanks, Betsy.

Betsy...

I just wanted to stop by and thank you. My p.c. (short for piece of crap) crashed last week. I did get some geek help and have upgrades on there way, but in the meantime I am running on a parallel system and I am not able to load my works program. I was trying to wrap my brain around the problem and then I remembered your love letter to Google. And Bingo. I can write in Google Docs. I have you to thank for this solution :)

Now I am in love with Google. Uh! OH! Blog Boy (Broker Bryant) is going to be jealous :)

Joan, Google Docs is incredibly easy to use, and fool proof (tested by this fool personally!).  You can also use it to collaborate with other people.  For instance, I wrote an article as a guest for another blog and I was able to send them a link to the article in my Google Docs.  You can allow someone to just view or give them edit rights.  It is really a great tool for collaboration.  If you go through the tour you will learn all you need to know.  Once you've done that, check out everything else Google has to offer (analytics to monitor your website traffic, reader for your feeds, etc.).   I don't recommend the spreadsheet portion over Excel, but I've found almost every other Google offering to be worth it.

TLW, my condolences on the death of your pc.  I love-love-love online storage of information for that very reason, which is why I also use Xdrive to back up my laptop (after a hard lesson concerning a large music library that went "missing").  I hope Broker Bryant can accept your love affair with Google Docs in time.

Thanks, Betsy.  Am in the process of installing now.  Your writing style is so illustrative(is that a word?) Extremely useful info, presented in such an entertaining way.  Makes for good reading.

Google docs and associated Google desktop features are rapidly becoming some of my favorites.  Especially true for drafting blog articles.

I love my Google too, still waiting for the spreadsheet to upgrade a bit.  Can't wait for some contact management software to rival outlook and the rest of the on-line programs.  I love the google calendar too, set it to pop-up, e-mail me, text my cell or all of the above.  No excuse to ever miss an appointment.

Betsy,

Was reading through your post to solve a problem that I encountered. Sometimes you know when you haven't done something for a while you just can not get your head around it.

My Problem? How to scan multi-page documents and then upload them into a post without them just being a link to the doc.

Can I do that in Google Docs?
