Speechless Sunday - The Birdbirds Are Back

Heron

A bunch of you live in areas with seasonal population shifts - the snowbirds and the sunbirds show up, and all of a sudden, everything changes - traffic gets bad, the restaurants are crowded, and weird people want to look at condos. Here, we just get the birds.

It starts in March with the ducks - they're just transients, on their way much further north, but we'll have as many as a couple of hundred passing through at once. They're reasonably well-behaved and only moderately noisy. And there are some additional geese to temporarily supplement our year-round guys - they're a bit rowdier.

Around mid-April, the summer regulars show up. Our herons arrived last week - we usually have 2-3 pairs nesting on the far side of the lake. They're among the alpha predators here, bad news for anything that lays eggs or swims in the shallows. The ospreys have returned as well, along with the red-winged blackbirds, the summer mallards, and the gulls. The bald eagles are coming around a bit more, and it's always nice to see them.

And we were very happy to see Lonesome Sam yesterday. A confirmed bachelor, he has been a summer regular on the lake since we moved here 12 years ago, and his stately presence always provides a sense of peace and tranquility.

Hi Dick Greenberg - I remember living in California and the swallows come to Capistrano every March 19th like clockwork.  One year March 17-18 there were hundreds that stopped in our neighborhood in Alta Loma CA on their way back. They make mud nests.  Mud was everywhere and stuck to all the homes!  I can never forget this sight!!!!

Hi Dick... our climate is such that we see many of these birds year round. There are some pretty big heron in our area regularly. It must be fun to anticipate the return of old friends each spring.

Dick- Now those are the kinds of birds I love.  In our little community lake there are 2 moorhens, and I'm wondering if they will be building a nest here or fly a few blocks over to Green Cay Wetlands which has a lot more to offer in the way of shelter.

Dick it is always fun  to see the birds come "home" when you live in areas that have  migratory birds:) When we lived in Marina Del Rey the Blue Herons called it home all year and boy they make a lot of noise at night:))Endre

Dick, you and I are in complete Nature Sync today! I wrote an almost-all-bird post today  about all of Spring's creatures gracing our back door. Lonesome Sam, gotta love him. You look for his return every year, I'll bet.

Hi Dick

We have our own share of birds, of many types, some migratory and many not. Lots more activity in our canyons, at the beaches and at our bird feeders...as well as the restaurants!

Love the photo of Lonesome Sam - what a elegant fellow he is!!

I love it when I see a heron in our area, though we haven't seen as many birds in recent years.

A good number of the snowbirds are back in our area as well.  Not living near water, we don't get to see the variety you have

We have had a resident great blue heron since we moved into our current house.  We named him Lurch and he is here year round. Fortunately, he has been well behaved, as we have 2 or 3 goose families nest here every spring and the goslings survive (we count eggs and goslings regularly).

Today, my husband threw some fish remains (from cleaning the fish he caught in our small private lake) on  the bank...late afternoon, we sat on the front porch and watched 7 eagles, including 1 juvenile (3 adults and a juvenile are regulars) and numerous buzzards have a feast.  It was a sight to see!

As much as I love our birds, the downside we don't get your cold and snow, which I love.

Lonesome Sam is leading a charmed life, Dick!  He likely has a plentiful food supply with water.  Home is wherever he rests his feathers at night, and no taxes.

I know my relatives in West Palm Beach prefer these birds to the snowbirds, but the snowbirds do support the economy. We see bald eagles on Lake Texoma on our southern border.

We have had a nest over our front porch the last couple of years. Momma bird has been very busy the last week or so rebuilding so I guess we will have our little bird family again this year.
