A Mother's Day Surprise!!
I flew in to Colorado and surprised my Mother for Mother's Day. I came up with the idea a few weeks ago when she tried to talk me in to coming in and surprising my sister for her birthday. I decided to turn the tables and come in and surprise her. I was so afraid that I was going to blow it as I talk to her on a daily basis but we kept the secret.
I was hoping to already be at my sister's house when they got there but they arrived first and she saw me sneaking in the front door. It was still a big surprise although I didn't get to see her face. You can tell by the picture that we were both happy.
I was blessed with wonderful parents. My Dad is now 90 and my Mother is 82 and they are still going strong; married 61 years. They spend 6 months in Colorado and 6 months in Arizona and my Dad still drives them back and forth. I had an Ozzie and Harriet type of upbringing. As I have gotten older I realize just how blessed I was.
My Mother was raised during the depression. She grew up traveling with the carnival. My Grandparents had the merry-go-round and several arcade games. She re-met my
Dad after World War II. They were raised in the small town of Kinsley Kansas but she is 8 years younger and was just a kid when he was leaving for the War. After they were married they continued traveling with the carnival until I was born. My sister is 5 years older so her first years were spent in the Carnival.
Having that Carnival upbringing my Mother does not know a stranger. She is a take charge type of a woman. She was a leader before it was popular for a woman to be a leader. She was an example for both me and my sister. My sister has her own business in Colorado as a Manufacturer's Rep and I have my own brokerage. I think both of us can attribute our success to the upbringing that our parents gave us. I can remember hearing "You are a Gifford and Gifford's don't quit."
I swear that the gypsy lifestyle has never got out of their blood. They have a little camping trailer and are constantly on the go. When not traveling with it they keep it as my sister's house in Elizabeth Colorado and often spend the weekends at her house. They were here for the weekend a few weeks ago for her
birthday and she set it up for them to come again for Mother's Day. In June they will go back to Kansas for a few weeks to Kinsley and Wichita. I think staying so active has kept them young.
With my children off seeing the world it was so much fun to spend Mother's Day weekend with my own Mother. Our son is in Iraq this Mother's Day and our daughter is a flight attendant for a company that flies internationally so there is no telling where she is going to be at any one time.
It has been a wonderful Mother's Day weekend! Happy Mother's Day Mother!!
Marchel, very nice post and I love all the family photos
