A Mother's Day Surprise!!

A Mother's Day Surprise!!

Happy Mother's day to my Mother Lucylle GiffordI flew in to Colorado and surprised my Mother for Mother's Day.  I came up with the idea a few weeks ago when she tried to talk me in to coming in and surprising my sister for her birthday.  I decided to turn the tables and come in and surprise her.  I was so afraid that I was going to blow it as I talk to her on a daily basis but we kept the secret.

I was hoping to already be at my sister's house when they got there but they arrived first and she saw me sneaking in the front door.  It was still a big surprise although I didn't get to see her face.  You can tell by the picture that we were both happy.

I was blessed with wonderful parents.  My Dad is now 90 and my Mother is 82 and they are still going strong; married 61 years.  They spend 6 months in Colorado and 6 months in Arizona and my Dad still drives them back and forth.  I had an Ozzie and Harriet type of upbringing.  As I have gotten older I realize just how blessed I was.Lucylle Gifford

My Mother was raised during the depression.   She grew up traveling with the carnival.  My Grandparents had the merry-go-round and several arcade games.  She re-met my Harry GiffordDad after World War II.  They were raised in the small town of Kinsley Kansas but she is 8 years younger and was just a kid when he was leaving for the War.  After they were married they continued traveling with the carnival until I was born.  My sister is 5 years older so her first years were spent in the Carnival.

Having that Carnival upbringing my Mother does not know a stranger.  She is a take charge type of a woman.  She was a leader before it was popular for a woman to be a leader.  She was an example for both me and my sister.  My sister has her own business in Colorado as a Manufacturer's Rep and I have my own brokerage.   I think both of us can attribute our success to the upbringing that our parents gave us.  I can remember hearing "You are a Gifford and Gifford's don't quit."

I swear that the gypsy lifestyle has never got out of their blood.  They have a little camping trailer and are constantly on the go.  When not traveling with it they keep it as my sister's house in Elizabeth Colorado and often spend the weekends at her house.  They were here for the weekend a few weeks ago for her Mother's Day in Colorado 2008birthday and she set it up for them to come again for Mother's Day.  In June they will go back to Kansas for a few weeks to Kinsley and Wichita.  I think staying so active has kept them young.

With my children off seeing the world it was so much fun to spend Mother's Day weekend with my own Mother.  Our son is in Iraq this Mother's Day and our daughter is a flight attendant for a company that flies internationally so there is no telling where she is going to be at any one time.

It has been a wonderful Mother's Day weekend!  Happy Mother's Day Mother!!

JEAN, Thanks!  I have a great family so love sharing their photos.

BECKY, It has been a wonderful Mother's day weekend.  The weather hasn't been great, it was snowing earlier today, but hey I didn't come for the weather.  It is kind of late for this kind of weather in Colorado.  It didn't stick though and the sun was out just a little bit later.

AUDREY, That's great that you are close enough to see your Mother often.  My parents moved to Colorado and 2 years later we moved to North Carolina and then on to Texas.  At least Texas is a direct flight to either Colorado or Arizona.

Marchel: What a great story. How often do these phrases end up only a couple sentences apart:

"I had an Ozzie and Harriet type of upbringing."

"She grew up traveling with the carnival."

Happy Mother's Day to you...and blessings to your wonderful family.

05/11/2008 12:33 AM by Hemet Home Loan Guy, Joey Aszterbaum (Patrion Mortgage)

Marchel:  How wonderful that you are able to spend Mother's Day with your Mom.  I have an old picture of my Dad in his WW2 soldier's uniform, and a picture of my Mom that looked quite a bit like your mom... with her hair that way, and her dress with the shoulders.  I wonder if they ever went shopping together.  Prolly not.  Anyway... hope you all have a great Mother's Day.  I am more than a bit envious.  I miss my Mom.  Take care...

KAY, SHE WAS THRILLED!!

MARY, They do love to camp.  That's great that your parents did that also.  They have brought it down to Texas to see us several times but we are a little far.

LISA, She is proud of her daughters.

JESSE, She was thrilled beyond words.  You can tell by the smiles.

BILL, Surprises are FUN!!  My family has always loved surprises. I know a lot of people just give money at birthday's and Christmas but we love the surprise of that special present.

ELAINE, It has been FUN!  We actully spread the cooking out so each one of us cooked a meal while I was here.  I cooked the first night, the second night we went out, my parent's cooked last night and my sister is cooking tonight.  That really makes it so much easier when one person doesn't do all the work.

LYNDA, It is a blessing and the older I get the more I realize how blessed I have been.

05/11/2008 08:29 AM by Marchel Peterson Spring TX Real Estate E-Pro ABR (Results Realty)

JOEY, I had not even thought about that.  When my parents were in the carnival it was a different carnival than it is today.  They gave it up to make sure that we had a normal upbringing.

I have a funny story that goes along with that.  At a small group as an ice breaker we were supposed to say two things that were true and one false and then guess which one was false.  I said my parents were in the Carnival, I was in band in High School and I got a ticket for being on an air mattresswithout a life preserver.  No one guessed band as being false; although a few did guess being on the life preserver.  The false statement was actually band.  I am tone deaf; I know as a musician that is probably beyond your comprehension.  I did get a ticket in Kansas for being on an air matttress without a life preserver.

KAREN ANNE, Where did your Dad serve in World War II?  My Dad was over in Europe the entire time.  He landed a few days after D Day and drove a supply truck to the front line.

BOB & CAROL, They stay at Mesa Regal in Mesa.  They have been going there for 20 years or so. I think they enjoy their winter 6 months more than their summer 6 months in Colorado.

KEVIN, We do have a special relationship.  My sister has the same; we are blesssed!

PHYLLIS, I was a little disappointed that I didn't get to see her face but that was a minor glitch.

ANN, I'm going to show this post to my Mom later today and I know she will love all the comments.

DIANE, Thanks!  It has been a special weekend.

SHEILA, I try to get together with them every chance I can.

I would have loved to have grown up in the carnival. But living in the zoo ain't bad. Your parents sound like the genuine article. The cotton candy don't fall far from the mixer either, Marchel. Lovely post. Enjoyed every word. A fitting celebration to a fitting woman!

Great post Marchel!  Happy Mother's Day to you.

My parents are from the WWII generation as well.  They are just a different breed - a generation to be greatly admired!

I was adopted by my wonderful parents in 1970 when I was 17 months old.  They were both in their early 40's.  I thank God for the upbringing I had.  My father passed in 2004 and my mom is still going strong at 78.

Hi M, looks like you are having a good time :).  It was nice talking with you today, have a safe flight home, and we will get together for lunch soon.  You look at lot like your mom, and neither one of your parents look anywhere close to their age...good gens!  I sure miss mine, and it's nice to see you love and appreciate them so much, they must have been very happy to see you.  I love the old photos!  That's what I put on my post in honor of my Mother, it was taken in 1944, and she is holding my sister.  We have another thing in common...only one sibling, a sister, and we are 5 years apart in age too :).  Liz

GARY, I finally did figure the pictures out but it is still acting weird.  Now every time I put a picture in I have to hit the shift key at the same time.  I'm back on my old computer with XP for a few days it will be interesting to see how it goes over here.

JO-ANNE, I do come from a unique family.  Not too many people can say their parents traveled with the Carnival.

STEVE, I am back in Spring but we did finally get a nice day on Sunday.  It was fun to be able to get out and walk & ride around my sister's property.  They built on 20 acres in Elizabeth in the Black Forest.  (I think that is what it is called).

JUNE, I have a very close family.  Distance doesn't get in our way.

REBECCA, I think it is a heritage that we can then pass on to our children.  My children's friends thought we were the weird family because we ate our dinner together every night as a family.  If that is what weird means then I will wear the badge with honor.

ANDREW, I have always heard the acorn doesn't fall far from the tree but the cotton candy from the mixer is a new one on me.  Very appropriate for my family though.

DUANE, Thanks for providing a group for post like this.

KELLY, We had a wonderful weekend.  It will be a memory to cherish!!

MARY S., My Mother was thrilled beyond words.  I don't know how many times she thanked me for coming in.  The weather was mostly YUCK but we had a great time.

KIM, I wish I could have seen her face when she saw me but my Dad said she was amazed.  I had just talked to her on the cell phone and told her I was on my way to an appointment.  She has taught me to never lie and I didn't I was on my way to an appointment.

SALLY, You are right family is the most important part of our lives.  I have been blessed to have such a wonderful family.

JENNIFER, They are the GREATEST GENERATION!!

CHRISTY, I thought it was difficult flying with 2 children so I can't even imagine trying to do it with 4.

ROBERT, I have had a GREAT life.  God has truly blessed me!!

SCOTT, They have been together 61 years and still going strong.

DEBBIE, Thanks for stopping by it was a fun post to write.

DEBRA, I personally think my parents are staying so young by being so active.  They are constantly on the go.  My sister and I try to keep track of them but believe me it is hard.  We are constantly calling each other saying "Do you know where the folks are?"

LIZ, I am just now on this evening on my old computer, without most of my files.  It should be an interesting few days getting my new computer back up and running again. Actually it is running but my screen has went dark so you can't see anything; which of course makes it impossible to use.  I will make it over to see your post.

SALLY, My Mom wasn't exactly a Cleaver but she does make a good Nelson.  She was a woman ahead of her time in her take charge attitude.  It sounds like you had a wonderful upbrining also.

JUDI, I was sure I was going to blow it but I didn't.  Actually the few days before I came I didn't talk to her long when I called because I was so afraid I would say something.

KIMBERLY, Thanks for stoppying by.  I do have a beautiful family, inside and out.

GARY, I have to admit those Kansas people are good people.  Our family has been in Kansas for a long time coming their in wagon trains a long time ago.  Our roots are still there even though we are spread out around the country.

PATRICIA, They have been married a long time.  It is a wonderful example for my children to see.

Marchel: Gosh...a lot of comments since our conversation. Yeah...the carnival never has been a very respectable place, has it? Still, lots of adventure and camradery I imagine.

I love the game you describe. I used that premise for a Meme once on AR.

My step-mum is tone deaf. She insists that we all sing Christmas carols. I'm proud of anyone who can joyfully sing out loud instead of being afraid of what people think.

The best gift for any mom--- seeing her kids! What a fun thing to do, and I love the photos. Lovely smiles from everyone. Thank you for such a wonderful post and I hope you get to see your kids before too long!

JASON, Thank you!  I have TERRIFIC parents!!

MARA, You are right seeing me was the best gift I could give my Mom; although I had a present also.  I will get to see my daughter this week but I won't get to see our son who is doing the tour in Iraq until sometime this fall I expect.

AUDREY, It was such a fun weekend. I came back with the crud but I would do it all over again even if I knew I would end up with the crud.

SHIRLEY, How sweet!  I think I am as thrilled to have them as they are to have me and my sister.  We have been blessed!!
