In Denver careless and distracted driving has become epidemic, and even though we are not to text and drive, you still see it happening everywhere.
SB27 has passed the Senate and waiting for our Governor Hickenlooper to sign to put this new law into effect. This bill will increase the penalty from $50 fine and one point to $300 and four points on your license. These violations will be assessed while the vehicle is moving, not at a red light or stopped in traffic.
Some hesitant Republicans in the Senate came on board when the fine was tamped down to $300 and language was included to ensure that drivers can only be issued a ticket if using a device actually led them to drive “in a careless and imprudent manner".
The bill covers more than just text messaging: State law would consider any sort of interaction with a smartphone screen that leads to distracted driving to be a potential violation.
Hopefully this new law will make driving in Denver a bit more safe.
