Geeze Louise...you have got to be kidding me.  Most of the condo's in Fort Lauderdale, Florida, don't allow pet's at all.

A few allow pet's under 25 pounds, some say you can have them in your unit, but the cannot walk in the common area's so pet owner's buy little carriages to take their pet's outside.

Most condo associations don't want, sheppards, pit bull's, the meaner type dogs.

Where do you put these people?

Most of the time I tell them they need to find single family homes without HOA's, however, they still insist on the beach, or the Intracoastal.

Most people that live here know that it's tough to have a dog over 25 pounds...It's sad to say and it's unfortunate, but how do you explain this?

These people get so upset....many people have pet's and no children...Some of the pet's are very docile, then again, some aren't...

What do you do?  What do you say?

You are not the decision maker.  I tell them it is their decision, but I would not waste my time argueing.

Life is about choices, and if they want to live somewhere that does not allow pets or pets of a certain size, they'll figure it out.

Sounds pretty straight forward... if they want to live in an oceanfront condo, or any condo, that doesn't allow pets then it's a decision between the pet and the condo.  Getting irate at you won't help.

Maybe this is a perfect niche for a developer who would do a project for those with big dogs, have a place to walk them, to train them, and if people love to have both the ocean and the pets, that could be a terrific business idea.

Karen, a dog of that size and breed sounds more like a bodyguard than a pet.

A dog of that size needs a place to run and a condo is no place for a pit bull.

Adam,

You are right, I am not the decision maker, the condo association is, and most of them do not allow dog's/pet's over 25 pounds...

Christine,

The condo associations will not allow it, however, they do not understand why.  I'm not opposed to pets, as I had a dog until he passed last fall, however, I knew I had to live where they allowed 35 pound pets.

Jesse,

I'm sorry if you thought I was irate, I'm not.  It's just that pit bull's whether they are nice or not are not welcomed in most of South Florida.

Jon,

You are so right.  There is an area in Tamarac that does allow this breed of dog, however, they have to register these dog's with the area.

Steve,

Good perspective, however, it's the condo association rules in most of the condo's in south Florida on the beaches.  Most of them only allow small pet's...under 25 pounds.

Lorinda,

You are right, they need space to run, they are not small dog's.  Some are 40-55 pounds.  Condo's are not places for people with larger dogs, however, a pet is a pet and many people have dog's that they love as much as children.  It's tough, however...the condo association's in most cases won't allow dog's over 25 pounds.

What do you do?  What do you say?

Nothing.  You simply give them the facts:  Community A allows pets up to a certain weight..Communities B, C and D don't.

Then leave it in the buyers hands where to live.

I am not sure it makes sense to me, but people have to make up their own minds about what types of pets they want....

Kris,

You are so right, and in Fort Lauderdale on the beach, there might be one place that allow's dog's over 25 pounds.  It's also a safety issue as some of the larger dog's are hard to handle and have mean personalities.  So I understand.

Charles,

You are so correct!  However, they also have to understand that they have limit's as to where they can live with their particular choice of a pet!
