I am going to call Uncle Sam my fairy godmother godfather, because we have our rebate check in the bank and we have pledged it to a local business!  Apparently, as of early June, we'll be free of the temporary, cheap steps we've used to exit the rear of our home.

If you've purchased a new or newer home in the Winchester, VA area, there's a chance your back door was "secured" by a few pieces of wood because the builder did not include the price of a deck with your home!  There are homes all over town still boarded up.

unstable stepsI'd like to point out that our own wooden steps failed our 11 month post construction home inspection and had 1.5 pages dedicated to them alone!  In searching for a photo of the steps in use, all I could come up with was the photo you see here!   Note my clever angle meant to distract you from even noticing them!

Luke Lang of Milam's Landscape has designed solid brick steps and a gorgeous patio and will be installing it the end of May.   I plan to update this page when the project is complete.

This post was inspired by the many poll results which predicted the stimulus package would not make a positive impact on the economy.  Because we have 4 children (& a bunch of other calculations), our rebate was $2400.  100% is being put back into the economy.   In fact, at a minimum, we'll be matching Uncle Sam's contribution!   We're not planning to move any time soon, so we are not worried about receiving an immediate return on our investment.  If we were moving soon, and didn't make the repairs, you'd bet our steps would give us a headache come home inspection time!

Are you spending your rebate check on your home?  Are you going to make a major purchase?  Paying off debt?  I'd love to hear from local and non local people alike!

UPDATE:  THE WORK IS COMPLETE!

Natalie:  I remember when I sold in the Centreville, Manassas area in the late 80's... and all the builders used those silly 2 pieces of wood and nailed them across the back door because they did not put up a deck.  It really used to rile me... but they would not budge.  I am glad you are going to be able to take care of it.

Karen, you are kidding me?!?!  I must be describing a tradition rather than a safety procedure!  :-)

I'm not far from Manassas, so please let me know if you come for a visit!

Natalie:  I just might be up in Reston this coming August for a three day seminar.  It just depends on my "disposable income..." at the time.  LOL.

Natalie - I got an estimate for a patio a few months ago.  Unfortunately, I still have to file my 2007 taxes and won't be getting a check!  Looks like my patio will have to wait!

Natalie,

In South Carolina (back in the dark ages) there was a time when taxes were not assessed on a new home until it was complete.  The law defined this as the time the final front steps were installed.  You would see brand new homes with construction steps leading right up to the front door.  LOL

We didn't qualify for the rebate last year because our CPA says there is an income limit or something, and if you earn over X amount of dollars, you're flat out of luck. Not that our $600 would have amounted to anything. Well, it could have paid to fix the shower drain leak I had to get repaired last week. Now that I think about it, every time something goes wrong around the house, the cost to fix it is often $600.

Can't wait to see pictures of your new steps and patio, though!

NATALIE - It's amazing how many builders will use the cheap steps that you are talking about.  Now part of it is probably because they want to allow people the freedom of choice to put their own taste on the design, but there has to be a better alternative to putting cheap touches on expensive new homes.  The good news is that you will be supporting the local economy with your rebate check.  Hopefully, it will help stimulate the economy, but I have a feeling that a lot of people are just going to use the money to help ease the pain at the pumps.

Natalie,

I guess you could say that uncle Sam got you one 'step' closer to your patio?  'Wood' you say, a 'step' in the right direction?

How did I miss these comments?! Blast that failed email notifier.  Any one else have the same problem?

Karen Anne  August is just around the corner.  Let's get together.

Tina  Have you filed your taxes yet?

Mike  Just think of how much bigger my patio could have been if we didn't have to pay taxes until the proper rear stairs were put in!

Elizabeth  They've got the stairs done and next week the patio goes in.  I hope to have photos soon!

Hi Pat.  I think we made up for a number of families who might not have used it to stimulate the economy!

Hey, Adam.    I still remember the upgrade for a small deck was $8,000.  Now, that's a builder who doesn't like to do decks!  Excellent builder, just not a deck maker, apparently.

Martin!!!!!!!! I've missed your humor around here.  Yes, I "wood" say Uncle Sam's got us one "step" closer to our patio!!!!!!!!  The most difficult part is learning to walk on solid footing rather than swaying with the rickety steps.
