Soon you’ll be breaking out your mower and using it more than you probably want. You need to take care of your mower so it will last you a long time.
Check the oil. Look for floating debris or oil that appears dark black in color. Old or contaminated oil should be drained and replaced. Refer to your owner’s manual for the correct instructions and type of oil to use. If you can’t find your manual, Google the make and model. Chances are one lives in the Internet world somewhere.
Clean out the undercarriage. Grass can get caked in the undercarriage and possibly clog the discharge chute. Use a wire brush to scrape grass clippings and dirt from the undercarriage and spray the remaining debris away with a hose. As a safety precaution, always disconnect the spark plug before working around the undercarriage.
Change the spark plug. To keep your mower functioning well, change the spark plug every year to ensure an easy start. Nothing is more frustrating than trying to start a lawn mower that has an old spark plug. Granted you get an arm workout but there are better ways to avoid hitting the gym.
Inspect the air filter. Check your air filter to make sure it isn’t dirty or clogged. Replace it as needed. This might be another item to replace every year, as it isn’t an expensive part.
Sharpen the blade. If you aren’t experienced with sharpening your mower blade, seek out a mower repair shop to do this for a small fee. Kids, don’t try this at home—the small fee is worth keeping all 10 fingers.
