I'm a day late with this post but yesterday was a busy day.  We had brunch with my Mom and Dad to celebrate Mother's Day.  I am so very blessed to have a wonderful, loving and caring Mother and for that I am very thankful.

Real Estate Mom  But, this post is not just about mothering it is about the Realtor® Mother.  Not only am I a working Mother, I  am a single, working Mother so my responsibilites and duties are many and varied.   It is  like walking on a tightwire, balance is all important.

I believe being a Mother is excellent preparation for becoming a real estate agent.  Not that I think you must be a mother to be a good agent but think about the similiarities that Mothers and a good agent share:

  • Dependability - From the day we give birth to a child, we understand that child depends on us totally to take care of its needs.

Isn't it the same with our clients?  They depend on us to help them buy or sell one of the most valuable and expensive purchases of their life.
  • Trust - Children have complete trust in their Mothers though they may not know what trust is or understand it.  There is no fear that Mother might drop them or forget about them.

So it should be with our clients though building that trust will be more difficult.  But to have a successful client/agent relationship, trust is essential.
  • Communication - Communicating with a child is one of a Mother's most important responsibilites.  It is a way of bonding, teaching and preparing that child for life.

Think about it, communicating with clients is one of the most important responsibilities we have to our client.  Clear, precise, honest and regular communication with clients is vital.

To all you Mother/Agents, a belated Happy Mother's Day and I believe your Mothering skills help you assist your clients in a special way.  You have lots of practice in nuturing and multi -tasking and isn't that a big part of your job as an agent?

Cynthia.  I agree 100%.

Someone once asked me what I did to make me such a good real estate agent.  Yeah, it was a compliment.  I get compliments.

I told them.  "I raised 5 children".

That'll do it.

Cynthia, Being a good parent is being responsible for another's well being. As an agent,  our reponsibilities to  clients are handled with great importance. We care about their well being.  Your analogy is a right on.  So glad you waited til after a wonderful Mother's Day to post!

Cynthia,

Of all of the presidential candidates, Hillary's been the most vocal about the state of the real estate business and our colleagues, has been extremely supportive of new legislation such as HR-3915, the Mortgage Reform and Anti-Predatory Lending Act, is supporting new legislation protecting new homebuyers and borrowers, and is supporting legislation to help distressed homeowners nationwide, and many other issues regarding housing.

Now...doesn't that tell you that a woman's place is in the home? :-)

Cynthia, I too, am a single Realtor mom and I loved your post!  You couldn't be more right about the comparisons.  A thought that came to me is that we also learn to manage people through managing our children.  Patience and foresight is required in both and mothering has cultivated my patience to a never thought of scale.

Belated Happy Mother's Day to you, too!

Cynthia - Single mom, wow.  Raising childen is difficult enough with two parents (especially when one is a dad - jk) and I raise my hat to you as a single Mom knowing that you've carried so much of the responsibility on your own.  Your kids know.

Your experinces will better prepare you for anything you choose to take on.

Hi Cynthia, That was a great post and your comparisons were very well culled from all the possible similarities between a mother's duties and that of good agents. I think that unlined word is the key. While those essentials duties are true of all mothers, they don't seem to always be the defining characteristics of the agents. Good agents, most certainly yes.

I am always a little amazed that all agents are not good. Though they may not be great, they should at least be good agents just to maintain employed by the brokerage. That is not the case and it occurs to me that neither seem to care that much either. I am working with one that does not share those characteristics currently and it is amazing to me how a buyer or a seller would select a person like this to look after their most trusted asset. I would love to be able to see into these people's minds and understand what it was that triggered their hot button enough to select the agent. If I then could rely on that ability to see into people minds, I swear I could own the market place. Since I don't , you can gather that I haven't discovered it as yet, :-)

I agree with your perspective. Our profession is sometimes equated with that of used car salesmen and personal injury lawyers so a mother is a major step in the right direction. I see myself more as a Financial Asset and Emotion Advisor.
