Art of Trash Maui 2017 - lots of recycled plastic junk

By

This year's Art of Trash event at the Maui Mall showcased some very creative artwork put together from trash and junk that would otherwise end up in the landfill, or as beach debris.  I noticed a recurring theme of plastics in our ocean, which has become a monumental global pollution problem. We are drowning in a sea of unwanted plastic trash, and we are the problem.

What are you doing to stop the flow of plastic into the waste stream?

I abhor trash in any form, Georgie Hunter R(S) 58089 ; even as art work...sorry!

As a SCUBA diver, I see so much of the human evidence in the sea; disgusting! Cruise ships have been notorious polluters for over 100 years, so I have never and will never take a cruise!

What fun, Georgie! A cool idea and a great way to be creative with found objects and more. Repurposing is good thing and a great way to keep some of this stuff out of our environment. I love that top photo!

Sandy Padula and Norm Padula, JD, GRI NMLS#1483386 It's really terrible how some people treat this planet, but we are all guilty of buying into the consumerism that creates this mess.

Georgie, I applaud creativity. I can envision huge mosaics made out of discarded plastics. You know they make glass countertops from discarded glass. It makes my heart happy to see debris turned into something useful or decorative.

I seriously believe it's time to go back to the use of glass. Glass can be washed and reused.  It can be melted and reformed into something else. In the 50's glass was returned because you could get a few cents for doing so. There was big money in returning glass for cash.

Now I realize this can also be done for plastic. However, it appears there is not a big demand for the return of plastic to a center.... I guess individuals can't get money for doing so .... I am not sure why?

I love what people can do with recycling materials. That cow is my favorite of the two! I guess it's true, one man's junk is another ones treasure! I'll bet it was fun to see all the new creations!

I am sold on art!

This artwork reminds me of collages we made in school from all sorts of materials that would otherwise been discarded. Too sad that this stuff ends up in our oceans or for that matter anywhere else where it doesn't belong.

Sussie Sutton I hear you!  I have stopped buying the silly single use plastic water bottles. I prefer to buy bottled drinks in glass for this reason.  Here we can redeem our plastic bottles for cash and recycling, but still there's way too much plastic being made and discarded every day.

Georgie, I love this every year! And your beautiful profile  photo is really quite fetching. I'm a big recycler/repurposer.

Here is an example of old barnwood that we took down from fencing around our pastures, and old tools I found around our ranch property that certainly could have ended up in the dump, somewhere. Also, a new neighbor (a former buyer of mine) gave me this chair that they could no longer use. Gayle's Folly

WOW - How cool is that artwork, Georgie?!  Love the cow!  I agree, I'm always surprised at the waste and the way that some treat our environment - just so sad.
