Why you shouldn’t feed the trolls

Have you noticed there are trolls in Active Rain? No, I don’t mean little creatures that live in an almost perpetual state of happiness, singing and hugging all day like trolls in the movie “Trolls.”

I’m talking about the Internet trolls who sow discord by starting arguments or upsetting people. They typically deliberately post inflammatory comments and argumentative messages in their attempt to provoke, disrupt and upset others. “Trolls” pretend to be part of the group, but their real intent is to create conflict for their own amusement!

It’s soooooo tempting to respond to trolls, but the best advice is to always ignore them otherwise you are rewarding their behavior and playing into their hands. Trolling makes a lot of cowardly people feel stronger. Anyone can do it in the privacy of their home or office because they don’t have to interact with their audience in person. They are hiding behind their computers and on-line names and when finish they move on without any consequences. They aren’t worth your time or emotion...they have a problem...let them deal with it!

So Don't forget and read this wonderful article……Don’t feed the trolls!

Dorie, congratulations on your feature - well deserved. Couldn't agree with you more. Internet trolls are not worth one ounce of time or emotion. Always amazes me what people will say from behind a computer screen.

Seeing it a lot but best to ignore them so they just move on to another venue.

Dear Dorie,

Good luck to them. It seems they do not get very far in this smart group.

Trolls can be seen and heard daily, simply watch the news or listen to radio talk shows. There isn't any news, just entertainment, and distress.

Totally agree! The only way to defeat the trolls is to ignore them and delete them.

I must be good at ignoring them since I don't recall any trolls. Maybe I am naive...

Well, I must be living under a rock because I haven't seen any trolls. But when I run into them on other websites, I ignore them. There is no upside to engaging, even when you win you lose because you've sunk to their level.

My first reaction was to disagree just to pretend to be a troll, but as a victim of tolls in the earlier days, I don't miss them.  I see their activity on local community Facebook pages and they are such a nuisance.

I have seen far fewer trolls, on Active Rain, of late.  Maybe I'm just not paying enough attention, but it seems as though some of them have retired, or been ousted by the powers-that-be.

Either way, it seems quieter and more peaceful on the land of Rain.

I agree - frustrate them by ignoring them.

Once upon a time I had a sister-in-law who was a troll. She'd tell the most outrageous lies just to get other family members at odds. Then she'd dance around singing "I just love to start a fight."

I stopped going anywhere near her.

Ah yes, trolls.  Those folks who are usually excitement junkies who feed off discourse.  Fortunately, I have been amazed over the years, that ActiveRain has fewer of them than other social media platforms.  It's best to ignore those that do appear.

There are just a couple I can think of and I've wanted to comment but keep my mouth shut.  Not sure why people think this kind of thing is fun to do.  Definitely not engaging is the best option.  -Kasey

I agree, so easy to pass on these situations. Why enable the "troll"  If they are not getting attention on AR hopefully their actions will stop.
