BALANCING MY LIFE ISSUES

By
Education & Training with Performance Development Strategies

What a great contest that Jeff Dowler has offered us this month.  The work life balance is so important.  This is my issue.

First of all I have never (well maybe for a few years way back) been stressed out regarding my work.  I think that I have mostly enjoyed my jobs in the corporate world and I certainly enjoy my business that I have run since 2009.  But that in itself can create a crisis of becoming a workaholic.  I will admit that I have a tough time turning off work and have the danger of becoming a workaholic.  My wife and family are very important to me along with recreation, vacation, and exercise.

My biggest issues are schedules and deadlines along with other interruptions.  My challenge along these lines is stopping working and shutting down at a reasonable hour in the evening.

In the last year my wife and I have had one planned "date night" per week.  When my wife worked this was not so important since we both had separate activities.  But since she has retired it is important for us to spend time together.

Exercise and staying fit is important for health so I schedule 3 days per week to go to the gym.  It is usually Thursday, Friday, and Saturday.

Finally, scheduling vacations helps recharge the batteries.  They do not have to be long or exotic.  We just take some time off to go away for a few days.

We are now in the process of buying a vacation home.  I will have more about that in a future blog.

But this is how we balance our life issues and keep focused on what is most important to us.

Jeff thanks for giving us the opportunity to ponder this and share our work life balance.

Hi Grant!  You always tend to strike a chord within me with your posts! Like you, I have a tendency to be a workaholoic (okay, it's not a tendency...it's full-blown)! I also struggle to balance life and work and agree wholeheartedly with you that a date night each week is such a great way to turn off the work - at least for a few hours each week!

Great post and entry for Jeff's contest.  Looking forward to hearing about that vacation home purchase too!
