This month Jeff Dowler is hosting an ActiveRain contest/challenge titled "The Challenges of Work-Life Balance - Your Personal Story". In his contest/challenge Jeff challenges us to Write a blog about the challenge we face in trying to balance our business and personal life, and what we do to balance them. Jeff's question of How I Balance My Business & Personal Life, is one I have to not only ask myself, but one I had to answer early in my life if I was to ever be truly successful.
The Real Estate and related industries are very "time" demanding. We are on call 24/7 yet we need to incorporate our personal and family life into those hours. We can have a successful business, but if our personal and family life is not equally or more successful, we have failed. What good is business success if we do not take the time to enjoy it with our family and friends?
It is so easy to get consumed in our work. The demands our clients, and referral partners put on us can eat up all of our time very quickly, especially when problems arise in a transaction.
For me the way I have been able to maintain balance between my work and personal life has been to prioritize what is truly important to me.
- God
- Family
- Business
Establishing the priorities was the easy part. Keeping from dividing up my time in the reverse order was the hard part, and requires a constant reminder of those priorities. I need to constantly remember that:
- First and foremost the number one factor in the success of my business, has been my faith and reliance on God to see me through whatever comes my way. From my very first day in my sales career God has been a part of it, and that has given me an incredible peace of mind to know no matter what He will see me through whatever I face. I truly believe that, and He has shown it to me over, and over.
- The support of my wife. She is an incredible woman, who has put up with the crazy amount of time my business demands of me, especially early on. In the 42 years I have been in sales, she has put up with phone calls at all odd hours. You know what I mean, the phone rings in the evening, weekends, holiday, and yes even vacations. She has put up with the lean times we have been through and did without. She never complained, and kept on supporting me no matter what. To say I am thankful to have her as my wife does not come close to what I feel.
Through my faith in God, and support of my wife I have been able to keep focused on the first two priorities, and not let the 3rd priority dominate my time. How I Balance My Business & Personal Life is not easy, because the 3rd priorities is constantly trying to move up into the #1 spot. It is a constant battle, but a battle I must win, if I am to maintain balance, and achieve true success in my life.
