Candor and Integrity a double edged sword wielded by a Beverly Hills, CA Realtor: Endre Barath, Jr.
This post was inspired by one of my Active Rain friends Carol Williams , she asked us to share our strengths and weaknesses.
For me this was not an easy challenge to take on, since I am busy with five escrows as we speak. So with that said let me share: I had a father who instilled in me that “candor and integrity is not only a requirement, but a must in life.” I can still hear my father saying it, as if it was yesterday. “...if you want to be able to look yourself in the mirror and sleep good at night, you must have integrity and be candid in life as well as in the business world...”
Having studied at the United States Military Academy where the Motto was “Duty, Honor, Country” this motto has continued to resonate with me for the rest of my life. When I served as a United States Army Infantry Officer this message was continuously instilled in me as well. Integrity was the essential attribute of the Army and its members. The Nation placed their trust in the US Army officers in order that they could sleep peacefully at night, knowing that their security was protected by the military.
This way of life, or should I say philosophy has stayed with me in the business world as well. I have been a Realtor in the greater Los Angeles area for the past 20+ years and the tradition of taking care of my soldiers was transferred to taking care of my clients. My clients know that I am very candid in my advice and my integrity is one hundred percent and my objective is to take care of their wants and needs without a doubt.
This has been one of my biggest strengths in my business practice as a Beverly Hills Realtor, as well as in my life. It has translated to the fact that I have repeat clients, who buy and sell investment properties, build on vacant land and appreciate my Candor and Integrity. They return year after year and ask me to represent them either buying or selling their properties.
Now when it comes to weaknesses that is a bit harder to verbalize, because it is difficult to face it and even harder to share with the rest of the world. This of course is due to “the fear” of how others will react when they find out our “weaknesses”. I believe what Eleanor Roosevelt said:
We gain strength and courage and confidence by each experience in which we really stop to look fear in the face…we must do that which we think we cannot…
Naturally it is still hard to confront those fears and overcome them. Now with that said my weaknesses are my strengths. I am candid to a fault. When I finish explaining the potential challenges and disclose all the issues, that a potential Land Buyer will face in the greater Los Angeles area, during the approval process, I sound like I am trying to talk them out of buying land. The reality is, many clients have no idea of the pitfalls they will be encountering during the building approval process. Some thank me and I never hear from them again. Others turn to me and as if I could represent them in buying a house or a condo instead.
The many who fade away do so, because I “scarred them away” with my Candor and Integrity. That is fine with me as well. My take is, it is their loss. I am a believer of what Marcus Aurelius said:
You have power over your mind – not outside events. Realize this and you will find strength
