 Technology is Moving Fast

When I first got in real estate we have very few techie tools. We used a typewriter to write contracts and if away from the office we carried pads of contract forms and carbon paper.

Cell phones were not common nor affordable therefore we carried change to stop at phone booths to make appointments for showing. A few years later the pager came along and we loved that.

Take this little quiz and see if you know the order these came to be.

Faxes were used and we were mesmerized by the technology of the transmission onto the paper. I didn't start using a computer until the late 90's and boy was it slow.

 

There have been so many technological changes and improvements over the years. Most have made the real estate business easier to conduct our business. They have also made it more complicated by constantly changing and improving.

Thanks, Debbie, for sharing some of your memories. When I opened my first office in the summer of 1961, we had no computers or cell phones. Copies were made by using carbon paper. And, that was before we had an MLS service in town.

I still remember my first day in 1989. Everyone was gathered around the fax machine for training. Most people had never seen one and no one trusted that it would really get to the other agent, so you had to call to check that it had arrived. WOW...the times they is a'changin'.

In high school, I refused to learn typing, because I did not want to be anyone's secretary. Ha!! Had to catch up quickly in college, because everyone types now.

I wasn't in the business when Palm Pilots came around but I did have one in HR. Those bumps weren't always friendly either. We've come a long way and for people like you, a long, long, long way!

It seems as if technology is forever changing and that part isn't fun.  Thanks for taking us back in time and thinking about appreciation for the tools we have that make life better.

We had an answering machine, which hardly anyone ever used to leave a message. We also had an ancient copy machine - rememer that funny, slick paper? There were two phones in the office, but they weren't connected. One was for incoming calls, the other for outgoing, but the broker didn't want us to use it. We were to write letters. On a typewriter, of course.

MLS books were books and we had to drive 30 miles to pick up our copies twice a month. And yes, the forms were one page each and we could either type or write into them.

When we did get computers and go online - in the mid-90's - there was no local Internet service. My son hooked us up with AOL and when I got the first months' phone bill I told him to shut it off and stay off! It was $400 for long distance charges. Of course the next month's bill was the same because of the time lag.

Debbie I remember the typewriter. I can't imagine typing a contract. I was in one of the turnpike stations a few weeks ago and saw a phone booth. I had to take a picture. I eemember the beeper and the phones stationed in the car.

They say that if you go to the store to buy a new technology, when you walk out the door it already has a newer/better version.

I thought I had hit the Big time when I got a pager. Now many of the younger people do not even know what a pager was.

I can only imagine what it was like selling real estate with old technology!  Today we have so many technology advances that make our work as real estate agents much easier.
