Something funny happened over this last weekend and I thought I would share it with you. I was sitting at my desk, when I noticed a couple walking towards the door. Since I was on the up schedule, I naturally paid attention as they walked up to the receptionist. Since they were very well dressed, and had driven up in a nice car, I was hopeful they could turn out to be a good walk-in. Within moments, it became apparent how far off I really was.

The woman started explaining to our receptionist how she was a broker from another area and she was up here looking at property and was hoping she could get some help from an agent here. She said that since she was from another area, her key didn't work in our lockboxes and she wanted to see if an agent from our office could " lend " her one of theirs, so she could look at houses for the rest of the day. " Do you want an agent to show you homes and represent you?" our receptionist asked her. " No, I plan on representing myself" she answered. I couldn't believe what I was hearing. This woman, who claimed to be a broker, wanted an agent to let her have their key for the day, or barring that, show her property so she could represent herself. Basically she wanted one of us to either break the rules of our board and give her, a stranger, a key so she could look at homes or show her property and work for free.

It was amazing to me that a person claiming to be a broker could be so stupid. We all know how many people waste our time and use us for our knowledge every day. Every Realtor I know has a story about someone who had them drive them around and look at property all day, only to have them turn around and have a friend/family member from another area write the property up for them. In effect, making them work all day long for nothing. Many folks have no compunctions whatsoever about squeezing us for every last drop and then leaving us high and dry. I mean, this woman, who is a broker, should know this better than anyone. Amazing.

Needless to say, we told her no. She actually left in a huff, like she couldn't believe this was actually happening to her. She was angry that nobody felt like working for free that day. My coworker's wife works at another office. He went to meet her for lunch and when he got back he saw the same woman at his wife's office. She was trying the same shenannigans over there. Guess what? They turned her down also. I wonder how many times she got told to " Get Lost "before reality set in.

Well obviously it would have been an honor for one of you to chauffer her around all day.  She sounds fabulous.  Some people are so full of themselves!

Like my 17 year old daughter is fond of saying..."People are dumb"!

I'd bet almost anything that she got what she wanted that day! We get calls and walk-ins that are very similar. Agents posing as potential buyers or sellers, Sellers posing as buyers, buyers posing as sellers, the list goes on! I'd say that a large part of our efforts are fruitless- it's the interactions that bear fruit that keep us going. It is very annoying to be misled, at least the person you refer to was direct and did not hide behind a facade.

Maybe she thought you needed help emptying your gas tank??? That reminds me of the story I posted:

The nerve of some people.....

You said it was on the weekend. She was probally thinking on a weekend she could find a "new" agent who might not know any better.

Shame on her.

How creepy!  I really hope she wasn't a broker!

WOW..that is surprising. I wonder if she really was who she said she was or a couple people looking for homes to rob.

Ha ha Israel, don't get me started.  We have a local REA that writes a column for the newspaper once a week.  Today's topic is the market is starting to rebound because there are less homes on the MLS.  To me thats like unemployment is better because there are less people getting benefits.  DUH!  People are taking their homes off the market.  Doesnt take rocket science to figure that one out!  The rose colored glasses they wear must be permanently glued to their faces.

Israel... My question... Was she even a broker.. or just a VERY bad scam artist?

05/11/2008 05:24 PM by Valerie Osterhoudt (Johnson Real Estate, Inc.)

Was there enough room for her ego in your reception area. What nerve! You would think she would have some sort of understanding. Perhaps work out a referral or something. Guess she will just have to stick with Combo lockboxes!

05/11/2008 05:44 PM by Patrick Lambert (Century 21 All Islands)

I wrote this blog because her actions were shocking. She really expected someone to work for free and was angry that nobody wanted to accomodate her. We have Realtors pulling stuff up here all the time. The number one scam is to have their clients find an agent up here to show them all the property, and then when they find something they like, have the out of area agent write it up. We do all the work and they think they will profit from our labor. It's disgusting and shameful. It really makes you hope there is such a thing as instant karma.

I'm disappointed in you, Israel.  I expected you to drive her around AND give her your key.  Then take her to lunch on top of that.

Tchaka-To my great shame, similar things have happened to me. I'm better at weeding them out at the get go, now.

05/11/2008 09:24 PM by Israel Barden (Coldwell Banker Mountain Gallery)

:) Well, she was looking for a handout and wanted to live off of my labors.

05/11/2008 11:18 PM by Israel Barden (Coldwell Banker Mountain Gallery)

I'd like to say I'm surprised, but I'm not.  We see this a lot in Arrowhead, too.  I just shake my head and get back to work.

05/12/2008 10:52 AM by Greg Steffens (Coldwell Banker Sky Ridge Realty)

Greg- The sad part is, we will give them a referral for them doing nothing. Just call our office and give us the contact info. We give them 25%, and they just have to sit back and wait for the check.

05/12/2008 12:14 PM by Israel Barden (Coldwell Banker Mountain Gallery)

That's pretty sleazy. It's amazing how far people will go for a "free lunch", so to speak. It always makes me wonder how on earth their mothers raised them. I know mine would seriously consider disowning me if I ever attempted a stunt like that "broker".

06/03/2008 01:01 PM by January Financial

Israel,

Interesting story.  It is just another great example why we need to get our buyers to sign an agreement.  I rarely do freebies anymore.  If I show one house without an agreement, you can bet I will have it at the second one!

If she was a Broker, that just shows you the ethics mess we appear to be in.

06/03/2008 01:26 PM by John Hersey, e-PRO Realtor (Prudential Bob Yost Homesale Services)

John- It's a dilema for me. In the end, I just try to give them fantastic service and if they are not honest, then I will have to deal with it.

06/03/2008 01:42 PM by Israel Barden (Coldwell Banker Mountain Gallery)

Wow, I think I would have laughed right in her face. I would have given her a key for a 25% referral fee! What an attitude.

It takes all kinds to make the world spin around. Some never learn at all. I wonder if the tables were reversed.
