Everyday we make choices that will affect the Earth in a positive or negative way. Here are some easy ways we can minimize our impact on the world. After you read this, go to the Earth Day Network to find out how your daily routine affects the Earth. Remember going green saves the Earth and saves you money since you are using less!

  1. Have you ever gone grocery shopping and 3-4 weeks later you find your self throwing out 1/4 of what you bought? The answer is to simply buy less...be conscious of what you buy and the quantity you buy it.
  2. Take showers instead of baths. Try to keep your showers to 10 minutes or less. If you are not good with time, try singing 2 songs and then get out.
  3. Turn off the water while you brush your teeth and wash your face.
  4. Unplug your cellphone charger and other electronics from the wall when not in use.
  5. Choose plants for your yard that are well suited for your local growing conditions. These plants will require less watering.
  6. Switch to energy-efficient compact flourescent light bulbs. The 13 Watt flourescent bulb uses the same illumination as a 60 Watt incandescent bulb.
  7. Recycle as much as you can. Keep items in separate bins or boxes to help with sorting.
  8. Get you friends and family together to hopefully swap things you no longer need or want. One persons trash is another's treasure!
  9. Walk, bike or use public transportation whenever possible.
  10. Get your family and friends involved in going green!

We have to go green here in the US  Unfortunately everything we do will only be undone by China's new industrial age.  But we still should do the right thing.

April, these are great tips and practices that are so easy to adopt.

I know someone who has a lot of home theatre and stereo equipment and he keeps it all plugged into one or two large power surge protectors and he turns them on only when he uses them.  He said that the difference in his power usage was vast.

Hi April,

I like that your pushing the green. Keep it up.  It is slowing going that direction.

I just can't switch to the fluorescent light bulb thing!  But I do try to choose plants that will grow locally with minimal, if any - watering.
