Moving With Maslow's Hierarchy In Mind

Musings by Patricia 5/16/2017

Moving doesn't have to be that hard if you think about it as it as part of the journey - it's the cycle of life. I created a chart that describes Maslow's Hierarchy of Needs with visuals as a reminder of how one move, one house, one change can make a positive impact on you, the economy, and other people.

Moving with Maslow

ACCEPTANCE

Physiological needs consist of food, water, warmth, and rest. People and pets have a need for safety and security, a sense of belonging; personal needs and feelings are real. As we develop and grow there are hopes, dreams, and goals with a need for achievement. As situations change, challenges are many: sometimes personal autonomy, sickness, financial challenges, status, education, jobs, and family life styles change. Some people have control over life situations; others do not.

ANALYSE

When the idea of moving is contemplated, it helps to have someone you can consult with to get the facts and your feelings sorted out before making major decisions. When it comes to a move, a local Real Estate Agent, local Lender, and trusted CPA or Financial Adviser can help provide facts and information. During the decision-making process, outsiders and neighbors don't need to know your business. It's a personal decision.

DECIDE

What are the issues, situations, or concerns? Get clarity and answers to your questions that have a direct impact on you and the lives of the people that matter most, e.g., children, education, work, transportation, etc. Consider the impact on your financial stability, ability to adjust to lifestyle, your family, vacations, sports, restaurants, location, medical facilities, parks and recreation, just to name a few. Is infrastructure in place? If you build how long could it take? Is this a temporary move? What is the ratings on the schools? Will elderly family members be impacted by your decisions?

IMPACT

Every move has an impact on other people and the economy. Banks move money, traveling has to occur, people need accommodations, food, fuel, service providers, community assistance with police, fire and rescue, builders, contractors, inspectors, appraisers, lenders, moving companies, storage facilities, stagers, interior designers, furniture companies, and of course Real Estate Agents - everyone has to get paid, sleep, eat, shop for materials, many have pets to care for, and of course, technology is a necessity to do business. Moving is a process of making dreams come true. Design your life accordingly.

Like your info graphic, and the idea behind it as well. Helping our clients/friends make a wise decision is part of our job, even when it does not help our wallet. There are often times when it makes sense to stay still rather than move, people forget about all the costs involved in making a move and the emotional stress as well. Good post well explained

Hi Patricia

This is an intriguing, and creative, way to look at moving! No doubt there are a myriad reasons why people choose to move that fit into Maslow's hierarchy in different ways. It's a wonderful infographic you've created and shared!

Hi Patricia - Nice post! You're always going to get my attention by mentioning Maslow. His heirarchy of needs is a great tool for understanding some critical concepts that relate to how we organize ourselves, our homes and our cities.

Dick Greenberg - Thank you, so much! I believe we must be helpful and visualization is a good tool. Charts, statistical graphs, interesting analogies, and any creative way for analyzing data can be a successful model. I have always been a fan of Maslow because it's simply a brilliant way to make help others to see and understand things more clearly without rocket science.

P.S. I appreciate your wisdom in so many ways.
