Ask An Ambassador: Frequency AND Content Matter!

I see it every now and then:

Blogging doesn't work.

ActiveRain isn't getting the job done.

I used to rank better and didn't need to work at it nearly so hard.

And maybe it's true to some extent.  Maybe ActiveRain doesn't launch you straight to Page 1 the way it did 9 years ago...when there were just a handful of real estate bloggers in any local market...if there were even that many.

Now it's a lot easier to broadcast to the world, and blogs aren't the only mechanism.  Pinterest, videos, Instagram, Twitter, Facebook and 43 more I probably haven't even heard of yet, but that each grab their share of the consumers' attention.

So it takes some extra effort now to get found and get those calls, but it's still possible, even probable IF you are willing to do what needs to be done.

Blogging regularly is just part of the recipe for us.  By no means does it have to be daily or whatever the max number of posts that get ActiveRain points.  Some posts are out there just for entertainment value and others are meant for the long term.  The longer the term a post will be effective, the better.  And if you can pair those long term posts with self-refreshing content...HELLO IDX pages!!...you're publishing potential goldmine posts.

Today we listed a great condo in one of our hotter markets.  Now whether the seller found us from the IDX page or a blog post about that subdivision, the bottom line is she found us, liked what she saw and wasn't interviewing any other agents.  Isn't that what we all dream about?  And our main post about that community was written almost five years ago.  Work then, payoff now.

So how do you get that business?

Understand your target audience and what they want AND aren't getting anywhere else.

Write to that target audience.

OFTEN.

With solid quality content.

Respond quickly when the consumers reach out.

Yes, it's work, but you've got a lot of other voices to beat, so you better get started!

Until next Tuesday, just Ask An Ambassador if you need help!

Hi BLiz

Good content and consistency are still important, and will yield results, especially when focused locally or by niche. It's always helpful for those who might not be convinced to hear about these successes. And congratulations on your listing!

Dear BLiz,

That makes sense. Writing about neighborhoods. Great idea.

Sharon, You have to love it when that happens!

Sam, Over 3000 posts here in the Rain, some work for us, some are like yesterday's newspaper and serve their purpose for the day and that's it for them.  We keep plugging away.

Sheila, True, a few places we could have went with that one.

Jeff, We want the doubters to know it WILL work, we just have to know our markets and give people what they want.

Dorte, The neighborhoods are our edge on the portals.

I've got to get back to working on blogging.  Thought I'd be back to my old routine by now, but then sick happened.  Maybe next week.

While frequency and content both matter, I think quality content is far more important than frequency.  Think about it, if you put up garbage day after day, what does that say to any potential clientele.

My problem is being consistent and posting frequently. I don't do either. I've got to get better at both!

Nothing is like the "good ol' days".  It does take work and discipline.  I wrote a post about this very thing back in '09.  Still true today.  :)

Of course blogging doesn't work. We only keep doing it because we're insane - or perhaps we have too much time on our hands and need to fill it.

Prospecting doesn't work either -just ask the agent who sent one letter and didn't get a response.

Saying "It doesn't work" is merely an excuse for being lazy.

Tammy, That and a wedding to plan will take you off your blogging game.

Myrl, I think the answer is a bit of "it depends".  I could write one good web page about a subdivision, add the IDX search results and I've got a page that can stand alone and work for me.  If on the other hand I'm trying to build presence as "Mason Ohio real estate agent", I'd better write a LOT of posts (and the quality better be good too or what's the point?).

Kat, You've got the skill to do it.

Andy, I've made it important for me to write (some might argue TOO important).  It's a very cost effective way to attract business.

Mick, We have to keep feeding the beast with fresh blogging if we want to continue to be found.

Richie, It does.

Marte, I think for some people it truly doesn't work.  Not because it can't, but because they haven't figured out the "how" yet, or expect results too quickly.  I've altered quite a bit in what and how I write when compared to our first years here.

John, It increases our odds significantly.

Beth, and on some platforms I'm not consistent any longer (Pinterest is just out there, although our old boards still drive some traffic).

BLiz, I just have to ask: Does the size of the post matter?  I think not. We all know that 2,000 plus epic posts are recommended ... yet we know that we don't need them to be found.

Kathleen, I don't believe there are any rigid lines that need crossed because it all depends on the topic.  If we're throwing out something "just for fun", (e.g. pictures, local events), length isn't important.  For some topics that need in depth review, being thorough while still being engaging is critical.  But I'm not here to intentionally gun for 1000 or 2000 words to hit some Google directive.  I write until I'm done, and most often for me that's probably in the 400-500 word count range.

I love this post, Bill! This is such wonderful information for those who hope to conquer their markets with blogging. It truly does pay off but, there certainly is a bit of work to be done to get there!

Thanks for reminding us about the importance of consistently blogging BLiz. Blogging is especially important in areas that have high concntrations of agents and brokerages like the two counties I work with 10,000+ agents and more than 1,500 brokerages. Done right it can certainly separate you from the pack.

T&S, Thanks for the reblog!

Debe, Staying focused is the biggest challenge for most bloggers.  It's too easy to chase comments and gold stars and forget what posts actually generate the business for us.

Nina, You do need the trifecta.  For me I try to make quality a given.  If I'm writing, I've got a purpose behind it.

Jim, Finding a way to differentiate from that other 10k is crucial.
