New Housing Starts April 2017

On May 16, 2017, the U.S. Department of Housing and Urban Development and the U.S. Census Bureau reported nationwide housing building permits decreased 2.5% to 1,229,000 units in April of 2017 from 1,260,000 units in March of 2017, but gained 5.7% from 1,163,000 units in April of 2016. Single family building permits were higher 4.5% to a rate of 789,000 units in April of 2017 from 826,000 units in March of 2017, and there were 403,000 multi family building permits issued in April of 2017.

Nationwide housing starts declined 2.6% to 1,172,000 units in April of 2017 from 1,203,000 units in March of 2017, but up 0.7% from 1,164,000 units in April of 2016. Single family starts increased 0.4% to a rate of 835,000 units in April of 2017 from 832,000 in March of 2017, and there were 328,000 multi family building starts in April of 2017.

Nationwide housing completions fell 8.6% to 1,106,000 units in April of 2017 from 1,210,000 units in March of 2017, but rose 15.1% from 961,000 units in April of 2016. Single family completions dropped 4.5% to a rate of 784,000 units in April of 2017, from 821,000 units in March of 2017, and there were 299,000 multi family completions in April of 2017.
