Real Estate Lessons Learned from a 2-year-old

We spent the day yesterday visiting with our grandkids in LA, always a welcome trip whether for the day (3 – 4 hours of driving typically) or for an overnight. Our youngest, Ella, is turning 2 in another week and has limitless energy. But then they all do.

I was musing about our visit on the drive home last evening, while thinking about some clients at home, and it occurred to me that we can learn a lot from 2-year-olds that’s relevant in our business.

my lego robotA smile is always welcome, and will bring another smile. Showing pleasure at meeting a buyer or seller, whether for the first time or subsequently, is sure to bring a return smile and generate a feeling of welcome. The joy Ella shows when we arrive is enough to melt your heart!! It’s not hard to be sociable and friendly, and it gets everything started off on the right foot.

Listen carefully, always. Ella is quite the talker, with an amazing vocabulary. Much of her language is understandable, but some is not, but if you don’t listen carefully you haven’t a prayer of understanding. And when she asks questions, she wants and expects an answer, and will keep asking til she gets it! That would be another learning – answer the darn questions!

Focusing on your client would be another essential lesson. Ella demands attention much of the time, but also is getting quite adept at playing and entertaining herself for long periods. But when she wants your attention, by calling your name or simply coming up to you, taking your hand, and leading you where she wants to go, the focus must be on her. As it should be with our clients, whether they demand it or not. Don’t get distracted or focus only on your own agenda!

Paying attention to what she is doing is key. Sometimes her curiosity gets the better of her and could present risk situations she is not aware of, and immediate adult intervention is needed. I think that can be true of clients as well. You can’t let your mind wander when playing or watching a 2-year-old. And being mindful of our clients and what they do or say will help them avoid risk situations they might not recognize.

Sometimes Ella gets distracted by her own play and what she wants to do, instead of focusing on the issue at hand, like having a snack before getting ready for a nap. It can take some persuasion, a little nagging, and perhaps some negotiating to get her to do what has to be done. Sometimes she continues to say no. Seems to me we run across this in our business from time to time, too!

Legos are a common bond with 2-year-olds. And while you might not be sitting down to play with legos with your buyers and sellers, often there is some sort of bonda pet, travel, a hobby, food - that commands their attention, and ours, and helps that relationship along. You just never know where those commonalities will arise and how important they can be to the other person.

Ella is having a wonderful time learning about our world, how it works, developing her social skills, and so much more. But there’s a lot we learn from her, too, about being responsive, caring, fun-loving and interested in her as a person. Maybe I’m just a biased Pop Pop. But I don’t think so.
