Memorial Day is a day of remembrance for those who have died in service of the United States of America. There are many that claim to be the birthplace of Memorial Day but one thing is clear – Memorial Day originated from the Civil War with a desire to honor our dead.
In 1873 the first state to officially recognize the holiday was New York. In 1890 it was recognized by all of the northern states. It is now observed I almost every state on the last Monday with Congressional passage of the National Holiday Act of 1971.
Moina Michael was inspired by the poem “In Flanders Fields” in 1915 and wrote her own:
We cherish too, the Poppy red
That grows on fields where valor led,
It seems to signal to the skies
That blood of heroes never dies.
Moina came up with a wonderful idea to wear red poppies on Memorial Day in honor of those who died serving the nation during the wear. She wore one and sold them to friends and co-workers donating the money to benefit servicemen.
In 1922 before Memorial Day the VFW became the first veteran’s organization to sell poppies nationally. The US post Office in 1948 honored Moina in founding the National Poppy movement by issuing a red 3 cent postage stamp with her likeness on it.
On Monday May 29, 2017 please take a moment at 3 pm to observe the National Moment of Remembrance. It’s important to take a moment of silence or listen to “Taps” in observing and respected our fallen National heroes.
