Monday...Happy Monday....and for me today is very happy.  I get to play with my new camera, the one my daughter bought me for Mothers Day :) This was after I spent 2 days looking for one. There are so many choices.....it's unbelievable.  I kept trying to remember the new camera Jeff Turner told us about, the one with the nice wide angle lens. I tried to remember, but I couldn't.

I remembered he said it took great pictures, and that was about it, and  that it was either a 23mm or a 28mm wide angle.....but even that I wasn't sure.  So you can imagine how hard it was to go into a store with that little bit of information and try to buy a camera. And this was my second day of going to the same store, in the same isles.....looking at the same cameras, looking for the right camera.

Buying a Camera can be quite challenging, even if you do remember a tiny piece of information from a review you read. There are so many things to consider...

1)  Color- Pink, Blue, Orange, Silver, Black...

2)  Style- the sleek ones that fit in the palm of your hand, or the bulky ones that maybe can fit in your purse.

3)  Buttons- Some of them are so tiny that I have no idea how someone can  know which button is which, and then how do you press them?

4) Screen- sizes that you can see, and ones you can't.......I'm over 50 and I swear I can't see  those little things without my glasses.....

5)  Functions- Do you want more manual control, or everything Automatic?  How much ISO do you need, and what type of pictures do you take....close up, wide angle (Real Estate) or telephoto....this might come in handy for some of those BPO's where you need a picture but people live in the house :)

6) Price- Price is important to most of us, and I was lucky because the store was having a sale.  Of course online is cheaper...but I like to touch the camera, turn it on, and see how the buttons and everything work.

OK, so what did I get....I ended up buying the  Canon Powershot SX100IS.   The picture of the squirrel above is with the close-up....not the macro though, and the 2 below are with the telephoto.  This camera has a great telephoto 10x Optical Zoom .  Notice the seagull.....then look at the second picture.  The one in the middle is the one I focused on...and in the background you see the rocks with the seals.  The bottom picture is with the zoom....

Seagulls and Seals

seals on rocks

Seals sunning on rocks.....The little guys in the water were trying to get onto the rocks.......

Ok, so you can see that this camera has a great zoom lens......and the color is pretty good too. So, for me, this camera fit my needs, and the buttons are big, and everything is easy to see :)  It feels so good to have a camera again.....and I enjoyed my day at the beach playing with it .......

Now for Mondays Gifts:

Gift #1- A recycled gift, but it's a good one none-the-less for a quick and easy way to Resize Your Pictures for your Blog or MLS and Online Photo Editing no need to buy anything...many of our friends here use this program.

Gift #2- Photo Tips....Have fun, and don't take pictures during high noon :)  The sun is too bright for most pictures.....Also try taking your House Pictures from different angles.......if you have time, walk around pretending to take the picture, that way you see what looks the best :)

Good Morning Kathy! What great pictures your camera takes! I have a Canon Power Shot A95 and I like the pictures it takes, but I've somehow gotten a problem with the lens they can't figure out...sometimes it's foggy in the middle of a picture. I like Canon and will buy another one here in the near future and I like the crisp pictures your model takes. What  a great daughter you have for getting you this! Sounds like you had a wonderful day at the beach!

Good morning Kathy! (and happy belated Mother's Day to you!)... what beautiful photos, and thank you for sharing them, along with the camera review. A year ago, I was able to upgrade from my unreliable little camera to a Nikon D40x. Indescribable joy and fun, having such a fabulous tool. I never realized how much I absolutely love photography--- they enhance the stories--- like of 'a house for sale'... and, grandbaby, of course! Enjoy your new extension of your creative spirit--- I know we will too!

Hi Kathy,
My Canon PowerShot A75 does a decent job but your photos have me coveting your newer and better model but I must use self restraint for the time being.

What a great Mother's Day gift!  Hope you had a wonderful day.

Kathy, This is a great article for me because I have been debating on whether or not to get a new camera.  I have a Cannon something or other, but after reading Jeff's article I think I will invest in a camera with a wide angle thingy.  Thanks!

Good Morning Linda.....I see you are a Canon person too :)  The whole time I was in Peace Corps my basic camera was a small Canon Sure Shot.....it too had a great telephoto and the picture quality was superb.....but it developed problems, and it cost more to fix it then to buy another one.  I just never got the heart to throw it out......it was such a trusted friend :)  It appears we are again a throw away society....is yours also cheaper to buy a new one then to fix it? Or do we even fix anything anymore...... LOL :)

Anyway, I read the camera reviews last night at midnight......and one of the things it says is the flash delay is about 10 seconds which most people find frustrating for photographing people indoors....other than that there are a ton of things you can do....or nothing .  Choices :)  And yes, I had a perfectly Marvelous Mothers Day ......thank you.....and I hope you did too.

Mara- What a great upgrade......I haven't gone that route yet.....and sorry all digital people, but I love film :)  The camera I lost was a Sony....and I liked it pretty much, it took good pictures, and was one of the best when I bought it.  But of course every few months it seems they come out with the newest, better, must have camera and tech tools :)

And by the way, have you posted new pictures of the Grandson yet????  Mara, did you live in Africa....I need to know if you got any pictures of a sunset with trees .......

Sonja- Ahh....I have the typical Black.....those color choices are for the small cameras, I haven't seen them in the ones that are a little bigger :) Wonder if they can make tie-dyed :)

Don- you asked did the color really make a difference?  Well, as I was standing in the store people were asking for a blue one, a pink one....etc.  For me, if I had a little designer camera, maybe the color would matter.  The color in the pictures is what matters for us, don't you think?   And not all cameras are the same......

Charles-Yes it does doesn't it.  The seals pretty much took over children's beach in La Jolla.....and I too had the feeling of being further north :)

Hi Kathy, I love the last pic, it reminds me of a day trip I took during my 21st birthday in California. It was about 2 hours off the coast of Newport Beach and the place was covered in sea lions, really cool.

Good Morning Cynthia- Oh, I would never have gone out and bought one if I hadn't lost my other one....even thought I too wished for a newer one, mine was just fine :)  But alas, after around a month with no camera....well, my one closed escrow was going to allow me to get one.....but then my daughter offered to buy it for me....:)

I did have a great Mothers Day....did your little one make you something?  Is she in school yet?  I loved seeing the gifts my grandkids made for my daughter....it was nice...and the breakfast, that brought back memories :)

Audrey- Ahh, rub it in that you remember what Jeff's article said :)  Anyway, I use my camera much more outdoors, so for me the zoom is more important.  I found out this camera has a Post Card Setting, and then a wide one :)  Can't say I saw a ton of difference between the 2 but will try it again with a few house rooms like Jeff did..... Good luck with your camera shopping :)

Susan T.- Nature has such a calming effect on people....for me just focusing, watching, and enjoying everything around me was so peaceful.  My granddaughter and I stood watching that squirrel for a while before I took the picture :)  Nature also has so many treasures for us, and a good camera can help capture a few of the memories...

Suzanne- Thanks....I couldn't believe that picture when I saw it, not from a digital.  I could have done that easily with my film camera....now next time I need to make sure the wildlife is by flowers that haven't died :)

Lisa- :) :)  Yep, I got it......and boy did I have fun yesterday with it.  The day was beautiful, and I spent the day with my grandkids and my daughter it was great ......

LIzards....watch later this week I will put up a few pictures that are even better than that...the story behind the pictures is funny too :)

Carole- It does take pretty good pictures......:)  Now if it would just serve up a coffee I'd be happy....:)

Naoma- Oh, I love it too.  Usually we just go to the beaches further up in North County, but we come here for the caves.....and Del Mar for the Dog Beach ....My Daughter has done many wonderful things for me.  She knows me, and I am very blessed she did this.....my son drove down from Vegas and did all the practical things....food, bills, etc.).....I had a wonderful Mothers Day :)

marti- I lived in Malibu growing up, and there was a restraunt theere called the Sea Lion.  We used to go look at them.....but further up north there were tons of them :)  This was the first time I had seen so many down south, but then again I haven't been to the beach in La Jolla for a long time....just the ones up by Encinitas and Calrlsbad.  Apparently in the 90's the seals took over the beach here :)

Thanks for such wonderful pictures and the information about the camera as well as the information on how to resize and the way to work with photos (piknik).  Real good stuff.  Best though is you seem to have that eye for special pictures and how to use the subject.  I love photography and love that massive 35 mm Minolta Maxxim 7000 with all the extra lens and such.  Hard to give up on it but I am trying.

Hi Kathy...the color in those is fantastic! A camera upgrade is next on my agenda...

I spent today learning th camera on my new cell-phone (just as compilcated for old eyes)My old one was 5 years old and I had never even lerned how  to put in contacts...so I had to learn it all!

I spent the rest of the afternoon sending people my self portrait!

Kathy,

These pics look really great.  I often forget to leave with my camera, so I end up taking a picture on my phone, which isn't the same at all.  I also have a Flip for video.  I have made a mental note to try and remember the camera more often. You just never know when you are going to have an opportunity for a great shot.

Fran- We just never know what will make a good picture.  I remember someone winning a contest for an early morning shot of a pasture.....they just took the picture, and well, everything was right in it.  So, Mr. Hunter keep carrying that  camera....with all your kids I am sure you have some great pictures.

Wayne- Yes...I have my favorite cameras that are film, and I just can't seem to give them up....with all the fancy lenses, and filters......digital just doesn't seem to be the same for me, but it's progressed so much since last time I went camera hunting :)

Joan- That's funny cuz I have never used the camera on any of my phones.....they just come with them, and in an emergency I might figuure out how to use it :)  good for you though.....I have neglected that....were your friends happy you mastered it?

Hi Rebecca- I saw the flip phone there.....it sure is a light plastic.....I picked it up, and thought of getting it, and put it back.  I'm not ready to do videos.....right now I just want pictures :) :)  And you're right if you don't carry the camera.....you could miss some good photos :)

Sally- You sure have....I can think of several of your Posts with a new camera :)  ones that Jeff recommended, and the other one I don't remember the camera.......next time I come over there we aboslutely must get pictures of the Turtles at North Shore with our variety of Cameras.......... LOL :)

That really does take nice pictures, I think in the next year, I'm going to be buying two cameras. One for real estate with the wide angle lens and then a really nice camera with a lens that I can see a flea on a dog from 2 miles away kind of camera. Always wanted one of those!

Kathy - here is the fish tale :-)

My daughter prepared a picnic on a lake, then took me out in a canoe---- blown to the banks around the bend from the high winds... as I began to panic about the water moccasins, a 3-pound bass jumped in behind me while my daughter screamed & gave me such a start that I leaped forward & we nearly capsized. Poor bass kept flying about 2 feet into the air & slapping back down onto the metal boat, making this loud, banging, while I tried to re-position myself & not have a heart attack--- all while keeping a watch for the snakes & ordering my daughter to row-the heck-row!!! hahaha!) How truly pathetic! It was a big fish in a very small lake.

Mara- Do you know Cynthia (from N. Carolina?)  I am asking because I told her recently not to make people laugh while they are eating :)  Your "Fish tale" is priceless.....I hope that you make a Post out of this....I think I would have yelled several pretty strong words, and also laughed after realizing I didn't really have a heart attack....surprising you didn't tip the boat over :) :)

Thanks for sharing this....loved it!

LOL! Ok, no more fish tales while folks are eating! I really thought the fish jumping forwards & from side to side was rocking the boat a lot. I considered trying to "bat" him back into the lake one of the times he was in mid-air, but I was completely uncoordinated, trying to keep my balance. Later on, we recussitated him (getting him back in the water & moving the tail back & forth to work out the air in his lung) and he swam away. Hope he enjoyed his free ride. :-)

Hi Kathy - I am drooling over the beautiful quality in those pictures!  How really super those look!

My camera works just fine, but I have to admit I have been really thinking long and hard about one of today's cameras, just didn't know how to do about deciding which one of the many I've read others talk about.  Your post here makes me think this is THE one I might just splurge for.

If I can ask a nosy question - what did yours cost?

Those pictures are just so clear and the color is amazing - I want one!!

Happy Mothers Day, Kathy

And don't forget the final step with the images... process all through some image editing software when you get home - I prefer Photoshop Elements - but even the software that comes free with your camera would be a help.

You can easily correct most lighting issues or other photographer errors and when you look at the image on your larger computer screen, you may see opportunities to pull some composition out of the image by cropping that you didn't see when you took the picture.  And you get to tag the photos with information that will help you find the images later on your hard drive with the organizer feature of Photoshop Elements.

We talk a lot about the benefits of image editing for our real estate photos but it all applies to our fun and family photos too.  And you can create special effects and borders for family images that we may not use in our professional life.

Congratulations on your new camera - you will enjoy the Canon Powershot.  And you will have new opportunities for your Photoshop magic.

Hi Ricardo- I laughed when I read your comment....I think those sleek and slim colored cameras would be perfect for you then.....they even had a very elegant one that the lens cover "slides" aways from the lens...nice touch.  And friend that's why they have so many choices, cuz ther's so many types of consumers :)

Don't forget our shrimp lunch....hey lets do it in San Diego instead of here :)

Hi Ann- The Camera was on sale at Best Buy for $225.....As I said it was my daughter that picked it out....she said it had great "old lady buttons"  yep that's what she said...and she's right  :)  I haven't used it inside yet, I'm an outside type of person......let me know if you get one so I can go to your blog and see the pictures....:) Oh and don't waste your money on the extended warrenties.....and this one uses rechargeable AA Batteries......again don't waste your money on the newest and best Alkcaline....just get the cheap ones....I found a pack of 12 that work perfect.  You will also need the memory card....I got the 2GB (it comes with a starter one of 16MB which is great for an emergency backup but that's about it).........

Ted- Oh yes......you are so right.  The pictures above are directly out of the camera....and of course I could edit, crop, change things and have fun....I want more time for photography....:(  But even without all that, we can help ourselves by trying to compose the photo in the field :)

Hey I have been reading CJ's Posts for 2 days now trying to get an idea of a wordpress blog.....thanks for inviting her to the e-PRO Group, she is a one stop shop of info......:)
