Yesterday when Mr. Bachelor was visiting (holding a boquet of
gorgeousImpatiens tiny pink roses he purchased from Eastern Market) he
mentioned to me that this coming Saturday Eastern Market in Detroit was having it's annual Flower Day.

The event came about when the local non-profit Metropolitan
Detroit Flowers Growers Association put their heads together to try and combat rising delivery costs and to help get the word out on their products to local Detroit residents.

What started as a small event has now grown so much that 150,000 people are expected to gather in Eastern Market this Saturday, to view
and purchase flowers, shrubs, vegetable plants and other gardening
plants displayed on 15 acres of bursting color.

While visitors shop the acres of gardening lushness, the children will be able to enjoy Merry Market Land area, and there will also be a Wacky Wagon Contest, that I'm sure first came about because of the practice of so many bringing wagons to pull around the trays of flowers, shrubs and small trees.

I have a wagon, Mr. Bachelor has a pick-up truck and Saturday if
we can both decide on a starting time that works with our schedules
we'll be there to purchase our flats of flowers and take photos of
the fun Wacky Wagons.

For those of you who have never been to Eastern Market and need
directions please click here.

Me and Mr. Bachelor?  We'll take Gratiot south almost to the end, hang
a right and follow the traffic flow.

I was there Saturday and the place was crazy.  I won't be braving it again this weekend.  Get there early!  My camera failed me this weekend, so no new pictures, but there were plenty of flowers!

Kris, The place sounds amazing, it must be very difficult to try to choose among all the beautiful flowers.  Have a wonderful time!

I was in Detroit in 1986 and have a vague memory of a giant Flower Show. Could I be right? How long has the event been held?

Maureen:  Mr. Bachelor was there Saturday also to buy veggies (and my flowers) and also said it was packed.  He has no idea where we'll park this Saturday, but we're going to be give it a shot!

Carole:   If I get there this Saturday I'll take pictures for you.  It really is amazing.

Andrew:  If it was an outdoor flower show it probably was this one.  Do you remember if you were near a place called Greektown? (Now Comerica Park and Ford Field are nearby, as well as Greektown). I believe they had the first one in 1966 or 1967.   There is a home and garden show, several actually, that take place at one of the indoor arenas/conference centers, but I'm not attracted to them.  Something about a flower show being indoors isn't appealing.

Kris, the event as you describe it sounds beautiful, and I can't imagine 150,000 people visit. That is a HUGE show.
