Tree of Life Exhibit at East-West Center
Opening Reception
Jun 4, 2017
2:00 PM to 3:30 PM
The Tree of Life is a mythological image found in different forms throughout the world. Often understood to connect all of creation, it has inspired artistic representations for millennia with influences from all major world religions and a multitude of indigenous cultures. Across cultures in Asia, the Tree of Life has had diverse meanings: In Hindu mythology, it is the Cosmic Tree; for the Babylonians, it was the tree with the divine fruit; and Chinese belief holds that one who eats its fruits becomes immortal.
This exhibition transcends borders to present diverse objects from 20 Asian countries portraying the Tree of Life theme. Although the emphasis is on textiles, there are also examples in a multitude of media including paintings, ceramics, basketry, metal work, jewelry, lacquer, stone, wood and leather. Handcrafted from natural and sustainable materials, the artwork focuses on both traditional and contemporary interpretations of the theme.
The opening reception, including art demonstrations, a short performance and an exhibition tour with visiting curators Edric Ong and Manjari Nirula, will be held on Sunday, June 4 from 2 to 3:30 p.m. Admission is free. The exhibit runs through Sept. 10 at the East-West Center Gallery.
