Selling Your House Time to Declutter Closets and Spaces

By
Real Estate Agent with HomeStarr Realty RS143922A

selling your house

You are getting ready to sell your house . You called your agent and received a list  of things to do to get the house ready for sale . The the hardest part is de-clutter the house and the closets . If you are like many people you probable looked and said where do I start

The closets are a great place to begin . You are going to be moving so let's start to pack up the closets and also clean them up . If it is warm weather and you live in a four season climate take out your cold weather clothes and shoes  . Pack them away . Let's make room in these closets and make them look big and spacious .  Clean them out . All the closets in the house even the linen closets .

There are many books and even videos on line to show you how .  Keep only what items are necessary .  There is nothing worse then showing prospective buyers closets that are messy and full to the brim with stuff.  If you must box your stuff up and store it at a family members house or rent a storage unit .Messy closets give the appearance that your home doesn't have enough storage space.

Next you want to get rid of all the small knick knacks and personal photos . I know this is hard . Many people object to removing personal photos . Buyers want to imagine themselves living in the house . This is hard to do if every room is filled with personal photos   This is just a suggestion but one to take seriously .

Next  take out or move  extra bulky furniture that is  not needed . The big chair that you really are not taking with you . Perhaps the old TV set that no longer works that is just sitting there . The end table that will make the room look bigger if you move it . The blanket you keep in the corner pack it way. Little things like this make a big difference

There look how much you have accomplished   Now on to the rest of the list

You are almost there

Great post !!! I'm going to share this on my FB buisness page. I'm not thinking of selling anytime soon, but I already have a plan in place. I divide my house into 6 sections ( one - two rooms each or a room and maybe a hall closet. Each section is assigned to one month, every six months and on that month, I deep clean including getting rid of stuff I don't use or want any more. So, for instance, I deep clean my master bedroom in Jan and  July going through the closet and every drawer and get rid of stuff. I've been doing this for about 3 years now and every year it amazes me how much more stuff I am able to clean out. So when the time comes and I need to sell, packing up won't be a big deal.....I hope. Hm....I feel a blog post coming.....

Sometimes sellers forget that storage capabilities are as important, well almost, as the bathroom!

It is a real task for them as they often do not know where to start.

I tell sellers:  take it room by room--then you will feel a sense of accomplishment. It can seem overwhelming to get a house ready for the market. In the end -- SO worth it!

Well obviously I agree with you!!

Sellers are going to pack it up anyways at some point.

PREPACK prior to listing and you are ahead of the game!

You got lots of response to this great post. Lots of good advice. People get so overwhelmed, but it is like eating an elephant you have to do it one bite at a time as the saying goes

Dear Hannah,

Since you do not want to pay for moving things you no longer need, this is a great exercise to start on early. That way, you can enjoy the new order for a little spell before saying goodbye to your old house.

Excellent advice.  Closets are often ignored by home sellers!

Jan Green  Closets are very important . Buyers want to see how much room they will have for their clothes . If the closets are overflowing  it will look as though there is not enough closet space .  So cleaning up the closets and making them neat is very important
