Question: Aren't all real estate agents REALTORS®? I thought the terms were interchangeable.
Answer: No. A real estate agent is licensed under the state licensing commission (ours is the Idaho Real Estate Commission, otherwise referred to as IREC). Real estate agents in Idaho are licensed to help consumers buy & sell vacant land, residential or commercial real property in the state of Idaho and must abide by state licensing laws & rules. There is no requirement for a real estate agent to also be a REALTOR® and not every agent is. In Idaho you will find that many commercial agents and brokers are not REALTORS®, although they can be if they choose membership.
A licensed real estate agent who is a REALTOR® is a member of a national trade organziation called the National Association of REALTORS® (NAR). As Idaho REALTORS® we at Jon Gosche Real Estate, LLC are also members of the state and local chapters, Idaho Association of REALTORS® (IAR) and Boise Regional REALTORS® (BBR).
As members of NAR, REALTORS® are required to abide by the REALTOR® Code of Ethics which was established in an effort to provide a higher level of service and professionalism to the public and within the industry.

NOTE: The Idaho License Laws & Rules booklet is updated every July so a 2017 version with any changes will be coming out in less than a month and the above will then become outdated. However, the newest version can be found online.

For more information on REALTORS® & membership see NAR's website here.
