"Your post has been removed from the ActiveRain group...."

boo hoo... I got removed from a group. I got an email from ActiveRain that said:

Real Living office in Columbus Ohio"Your post 'Real Living - Just Say NO to comment spam' has been removed from the group 'RealLiving' by an administrator/moderator. You should either review the guidelines for the group or contact this person if you have any questions."

Wait I removed the 'Real Living - Just Say NO to comment spam' post from the Real Living Group myself... I am the moderator / administrator / founder.... or one of the moderators of the Real Living group. I rewrote it and was having trouble with the editing, so I deleted it and reposted it.

I had read that we get emails when posts are removed from ActiveRain groups recently. I had never seen one before. That should help groups. Or kill off groups, depending on how people take the emails. I have banned a bunch of "bozos" from a couple of groups because they just did not get it...kept posting stuff that did not meet the group guidelines, over and over. Mostly in the 'My other blog is...' group and the now defunct because of mischief 'Welcome' group.

I got an email from an agent (not with Real Living) recently apologizing for posting things to the Real Living Group:

"I'm so sorry that I didn't realize Real Living was a brokerage and not an HGTV like group.

Hopefully, you can forgive me! I know I read an awesome post once and thought I just loved the topic and misread the group for what it wasn't.

Happy Monday!"

Gracious of her huh?

Forgive her? Of course! Welcome

She is not the first to not understand that Real Living is a real estate brand, like RE/MAX, Prudential, Coldwell Banker. Being mistaken for a maqazine, lifestyle brand is not the worst thing in the world. The Real Living Group's Guideline says:

"Real Living is a brokerage. A group for those associated with Real Living and their friends. Do not post listings or ads to the group UNLESS you are a Real Living Realtor. This group is not strictly Real Living HER, Central Ohio... This group is Real Living brokerages across the US. If you are affiliated with another real estate brokerage please don't post to the group, unless it has something to do with Real Living. Thanks"

This morning there were two posts about another brokerage posted to the Real Living group. From someone from Columbus Ohio (Real Living is based in Columbus Ohio.)

Neal Bloom recently changed the guidelines for the Almost Anything Goes group.

The Ethics and the Realtor Group Monika McGillicuddy founded has this guideline:

" Anything to do with the REALTOR Code of Ethics...Questions on Behavior...The Enforcement Process...Lets talk the Code..."

A recent post to the Ethics and the Realtor group says:

****Please do not add your listing posts, market reports, political and religious post, self promotion type posts as they will be removed from the group.****

I like groups for reading ActiveRain, or the groups that are moderated anyway. I can read by topic using groups.

Do you pay attention to group guidelines?

Maureen,I don't delete anyone's post from any of my groups..if they take the time to post it....even if it is miscategorized,I still leave it.I think I would be offended if someone removed my post.

I,as well, have a group named after my company...but anyone is welcome to join it...I just call it friends and associates of....

MM,

Great post! You pretty much sum up whats wrong with many posters who post to groups.Groups are wonderful, but many mods do seem to go overboard..

We`ve dealt with Real Living in our area many times and have always had great working relationships with the agents who work there..

Unfortunately when you run groups like I do it becomes an issue when you have to go in and clean up the ones that don't belong.  The bottom line is if you are the groups mod then it's your choice what belongs...there are over 2000 groups and there shouldn't be any complaints so all you need to do is post to a group that really applies to your post.

Very good posting.  It takes a very big person to recognize they are wrong and apologize and a bigger person to understand the mistake and accept the apology.  We have all made mistakes and all been wrong.  Not everybody will admit it though.  Those are the people I respect most.  The ones who will stand up and say "I was wrong.".

Maureen, I recently received that notice removing one of my blogs, which I still believe was relevant to the particular group.  But the moderators have the right to make the final decision.  And some entries are truly inappropriate and should be removed.

I had such bad experienes from some of the groups I joined early on that I simply un-subscribed and haven't been back to a group yet.  (Yes, I did read the rules and guidelines, but some were so vague and made up rules as they went along it was more than a bit difficult to understand.)

Maureen This is one of the reasons I don't post to any groups except to Localism. To many different protocles, would forget for different groups.

Thom Singer thomsinger I long for creative conversations not just noise on the internet

To me the attitude "I don't delete anyone's post from any of my groups..if they take the time to post it....even if it is miscategorized,I still leave it."  is what makes ActiveRain noisy...

IMHO you aren't respecting the readers of the group.  Or the group doesn't have readers.  That Tweet  came up right at the same time.

People don't read splogs on the internet because they aren't readable. The ActiveRain groups that will allow spam read like splogs.

If I go to read about ethics I don't want to read "listing posts, market reports, political and religious post, self promotion type posts."

Thanks all for the comments.

Sometimes I get frustrated by the postings I see on certain groups.  I try to think about my blog and post to the groups that I think it would fit into.  I might miss the boat sometimes but when I read a negative post on the group Nothing But the Positive or a market report on the Them Them Group it drives me crazy.  Please think about where you are posting and the groups you choose to be a part of.

That's a tough one I probably would be slightly offended but yet if I posted in the wrong category it's really only right if you delete me. However Real Living is a misguiding name for a real estate brokerage. Kind of fits but then again does sound like an off shoot magazine of HGTV or Martha Stewarts Living or is it Real Living.

I just had an email from the Columbus newbie who I deleted this AM.  Really this post has nothing to do with her posts. I just added the:

"This morning there were two posts about another brokerage posted to the Real Living group. From someone from Columbus Ohio (Real Living is based in Columbus Ohio.)"

at the last minute as I moderated the Real Living Group.

The timing is wild...  she was also very gracious.  I wrote this Monday when an agent in Virginia apologized for posting things to the Real Living group.  I asked her permission to post the email that is here.

I once suggested "pop up's"  for the group's guidelines... It is sometimes hard to remember what the guidelines of a group are.  I have posted things to the "My Other Blog is..." group (which I moderate ) and deleted them more than once.

How would I react if someone else deleted my post (so far I am the only one I am aware of who has deleted me...) I hope I would say "ouch, ouch, ouch...." and move along.  I hope I would read the guidelines and understand why I was deleted.

Brian... It is possible to delete posts by accident when moderating a group.  Or I have.  Most moderators are probably more coordinated and smarter than me but I have had to email a couple of people and ask them to repost to the group, that I deleted them accidently rushing through posts.

The email from ActiveRain when deleted does say to contact the group's moderator "contact this person if you have any questions."

My experience being contacted by people I have deleted from groups made me take a three week hiatus once... there are people who take it very personally.

Thanks all for the comments!

Maureen, you have brought up a valid point. First time shame on me, second time well just don't post in that group anymore. I have read the rules, in my opinion if I post to a group I feel they fit into the groups rules and ideas. I am here to sell Real Estate, why would I place something in a group that could be remove. Just my thoughts. Just say no and don't post to that group anymore. This is all opinions.

I've only ever had 1 post removed from a group, and it seemed a bit over the top. I knew the group guidelines and thought it was on topic. The moderator disagreed and removed it. I haven't posted there since.

I think I am pretty lenient Frank.. partly because it is often hard to keep track of how many times someone has spammed a group with an inapprpriate post. I think I have a three times and you are out of the group rule but there was one woman who is spamming for a non real estate website (not a blog) but she spaced it out  and probably got a bunch of entries  posted serially into the "My Other Blog is..." group and up for awhile before I deleted them...  and I am not even 100% sure if I have banned her yet.  I could not tell you her name or what market she is in but when I see stuff from her I click to see if she is still doing it.  She is. I think she is just helping a local website with SEO.  It is a commercial website.  It seems like a lovely website, but it is not a blog, she is not blogging about it on another blog, she is posting AR blogs about a local business, doesn't fit the guideline, I put in place.

I tried emailing people who posted inappropriate posts to a group for a few months.  It does NOT work...It is not worth it.

Maureen, as a moderator of a group myself, the misposts are some times a tough call. There are so many that may over look the group guidelines and mistakenly post to a group. That's where we as moderators appear to have egg on our face if we remove a post. I know many of the moderators aren't the tough person type, that are just looking for a reason for control, were just following the group guidelines. So please don't shoot the messenger or in this case the moderators.

I did not know that Real Living was a brokerage like RE/MAX, C-21 or others.  I've learned something from this blog.

Some take this stuff way to serious.  I read a few folks moaning about having their posts removed from a group

I've been beat up over deleted posts both in e-mail and in public. I understand wanting to take a hiatus...i have felt that way...often.

I must admit my group is getting better BUT still we have to delete a lot of posts on a regular basis. Most people get offended and some have left the group over it but still we try and keep the group on topic. I think my guideline are pretty clear and I think a good amount of people don't bother reading those guidelines.

05/17/2008 09:36 PM by Monika McGillicuddy~REALTOR®~ N.H. Real Estate Broker & Trainer (Prudential Verani Realty/Hampstead)

Randy I'm moaning about being removed from a group.

To me most  groups are for the readers.  If I go to Monika's group, I want to read about ethics. If I am reading recipes, jokes, listings,  market reports, political,  religious post, self promotion type posts... I will probably not come back to try to read about ethics.

To me an attitude like "I don't delete anyone's post from my groups.  If they take the time to post it, even if it is miscategorized,I will leave it." is spineless (depending on the group) and does a disservice to the readers.  I can't imagine as a reader going to a group like that and reading.  If I was posting to a group that was that weakly moderated I would (and do quit) because I can't read the group for that topic.

I don't always post everything I write to as many groups as possible but I don't have a problem getting read. When groups started some people would post to a huge number of groups. To try to get read?

Lots of the groups are not moderated for reading they're  moderated as "clubs."  There is NOTHING wrong with that.  The Real Living group.. anyone who is affiiliated with Real Living can post anything they write there.  It is for us to support one another, read one another, get to know one another.  Maybe in the future that group will have to change and just be focused on Real Living news or maybe it will remain as is.

Hopefully people will get over being offended and read the guidelines of the groups that they are posting to.  Thanks all for the comments.
