Saving Money on Gas Expenses

The price of gas seems to be rising on a daily basis, and if you listen to the media reports, there is no end in sight.  In fact, rising gas prices and the price per barrel of oil may have surpassed the news coverage that the housing market receives on a regular basis.  Of course, there is no disputing the media reports, since we can all see what is going on at the pumps each day.

It's hard to believe that anyone would be longing for $2.99 per gallon gas prices, but at this point, it does seem like a bargain.  In fact, Chrysler is using this price point as a tool to help sell new cars with their $2.99 gas guarantee promotion.  There is no telling when gas prices will be under $3 per gallon again, so this is a smart marketing technique for Chrysler to use to bring in buyers.

Unfortunately, anyone that is not in the market for a new car will not be able to take advantage of the Chrysler promotion.  However, that does not mean that you can't do anything to minimize our gas expenses.  At FuelEconomy.gov, you can find helpful tips to get more miles per gallon by simply maintaining your car properly and by making a conscious effort to make the most out of any car usage by planning before driving.

Another way to maximize your fuel economy is to fill up your tank at the gas stations that have the lowest prices.  To help find the cheapest gas in your area, you can check out websites like GasBuddy.com and GasPriceWatch.com.  If you'd like to check out all of the gas prices in the area, and see them plotted out on a map, check out GasPrices.Mapquest.com.

The rising cost of gas is something that is going to be an issue for a while, but hopefully, by doing a little bit of research before filling up, you will be able to save money at the pump.  If anyone has other suggestions about how to save money on gas, please feel free to leave them in the comments section of this post, or link to other websites that may be helpful.

While I don't normally encourage linking to other peoples' blogs in the comment section of my posts, in this case I would like to make an exception.  If you have written a blog on this topic, or if you have read a blog on this topic, and you would like to include a link to it in the comments section of this post, please feel free to do so.  After all, we're all in this together!

Adam - I saw the ad for $2.99 guaranteed gas for a year in our local paper.  Austin has a site devoted to gas prices here, and I probably should start using it more often.

i read an interesting blog earlier about http://www.dashfly.com, which is a new Internet based mapping solution for home showings.  If we gotta go and gotta use the old Chrysler Hemi Magnum, at least we can choose the most efficient route!  Here in SW Florida, our MLS provides Listing Book, which has the same efficient route mapping facility.

Adam, petrol could very much be our ruination. I'm driving up north to retrieve my oldest from college. I stopped outside of Harriman, NY and paid $3.99 per gallon for regular. A few miles up the road, same gas for $3.87

Twelve cents per gallon cheaper. Now a 3% mark-up from the competition doesn't sound egregious unless you're peddling several millions of gallons daily.

Seems like foreclosure and gas blogs are all the rage these days on Active Rain. Hope body-piercing comes back in vogue. I miss the photos. ;)

Adam, great thoughts and links. I recently came across a tip; Gas up in the early morning. The underground storage tanks that stations have are not tempersture controlled and as the day go on it gets hotter and you have evaporation and fumes. You then end up paying for gas that is partially fume.

Adam,

I know in my area where the "cheaper" gas is and try and make the pit stops now before the tank is on empty.  I'm interested in the small print on the 2.99 per gallon gas price that the car dealers are offering.  It might be a good incentive to get some folks out of their SUV's and into a more fuel efficent vehicle.

I have read that gas could go as high as $200 a barrel and my Father was telling me in the English newspapers that that could translate to as much as $7.00 per gallon, of course in the UK they are already paying more than that and 80% of that is government taxes.  We are trying like crazy to conserve gas, and I find myself really planning my driving, where as I used to not think of driving 60 miles to shop I would not consider it now.

I wrote a blog on the subject a couple of weeks back about moving back to town because of rising gas prices. http://activerain.com/blogsview/491267/Relocating-back-to-town

Adam ~ Thanks for sharing the links for finding the cheapest price.  I almost choked on Saturday when I filled up at 3.99 a gallon (regular!).  I have always combined errands in the car to be the most economical time wise and I'm hoping that habit will help me out now.

I can't believe gas has gotten so expensive. Man, it seems like I am feeling up several times a week. I probably should invest in a bike.

I know something that can save some money is buying your gas at Sams Club or Costco...Right now, Costco has an American Express card that will give like 5% cash back on your gas purchases.

Mick traded in his Suburban for a Mazda 3 in November.  I'm so happy he did.  We were in the 2.70's over the wkd for midgrade, so you're scaring me a little when you're "longing for the 2.99/tk."  :-)

I remember being at the gas station 8 years ago and thinking - Wow.  I can't believe gas has gone up to $1.87 a gallon.  The good old days...   Will keep an eye on this post for other ideas.

BTW - the Honda Civic Hybrid does a great job - and the extra cost balances out after 3 years.  Now when are we going to see more American hybrids???

Adam, I think there is no easy answer to these sky high gas prices. It is hurting everyone. A higher mpg vehicle will help or a hybrid as well as planning trips.

Adam,

Thanks for the post.  I am driving a large import SUV, but with the three young children, the room is worth the pain at the pump. BUT, I am in a unique situation in that I work from home and have for the past 8 years now.  Also, I live in a small resort town, so during the summer we actually skip the car and walk to alot of places.

To go grocery shopping is a 5 minute ride for me.  But I planned it this way.

Now taking trips- weekend or day, which we do alot of in the summer, I will be thinking about how far I want to go and making those choices accordingly.

I think carpooling can be a good alternative if you know someone near you.  Also, more companies I believe are looking into hiring remote workers, so some consumers might want to look into the option or job shares. Runzheimer International

conducts regular studies on this.

My last three cents is to look at other ways to pay less and still get quality products to balance the hit to your wallet at the pump.  Clothes, groceries, even day trips all have cheaper alternatives when you do the research.

Thanks for the post.

Also try to keep the tank on full. Oh and riding the bike helps also. Keep the environment clean.

If you buy a Wal Mart Gift card, you can save 3 cents a gallon at Murphys USA which are the gas stations at most Wal mart stores.

Great Post, Adam!  There are so many ways to cut down on fuel consumption when you really think about it.  I just posted a challenge to AR members to start Neighborhood Care Teams in their local communities to help out when a neighbor or their relatives are sick.

Your post inpsired me to realize that we don't need to wait for a "dire" need in order to be good neighbors.  Before going out to the grocery store, pharmacy or post office, we could call our neighbor and ask if they need us to pick anything up for them while we are out.  I know my neighbors wouldn't take advantage of me with it and they'd reciprocate!  In the end, we all burn less gas and cash!  Here's the link to the post in case anyone is interested.

Adam, we enjoyed a little bit of a dip, then right back up to $4.09, but down from $4.24 in our area.
