JUNE 1 THROUGH JULY 5TH DECLARED NATIONAL FIREWORKS SAFETY MONTH
Whether you like to light a sparkler or two or plan the most eye-catching display where you live, be sure to follow all local laws regarding fireworks. Be especially alert this JULY 4th for anyone using illegal fireworks in your community.
*Looking for a quick way to tell what's legal? Avoid fireworks packaged in brown paper - an indicator that those fireworks were made for professional displays and not intended for consumers. Also avoid anything that starts with M, such as the M-80, M-100, etc. as well as cherry bombs. These products are illegal because they are produced with no quality control, have shorter fuses, which may result in injuries. If it explodes, crawls or shoots up in the air, odds are it's illegal.
California fireworks laws divide fireworks into 2 categories: "Dangerous" and "Safe and Sane" fireworks. Dangerous fireworks are always illegal unless you hold a special display license. Safe and Sane fireworks may be sold, purchased and used by the general public within strict parameters.
Violations of California's fireworks laws are misdemeanors with penalties that include up to 1 year in county jail and/or a fine of up to $1,000.
Please, be sane and sensible with fireworks and report anyone using dangerous, illegal fireworks.
Here are a few quick tips to keep in mind:
- Keep it legal.
- Keep water close.
- Do not allow children to handle fireworks.
- Keep your pets away and safe.
- Use safety glasses to protect your eyes when lighting fireworks.
- Keep a first aid kit handy.
- Do not mix alcohol or drugs and fireworks!
Follow these simple guidelines and be safe still enjoying the fireworks!
Spread the word to make sure everyone stays safe!
