Steeples and Clocks

Steeples and clocks are something many people don't pay attention to anymore. Though very common in parts of Europe, New England, and states that were settled for example by East Europeans, it's not something I myself have paid much attention to in awhile until I was in Lake Geneva, Wisconsin this past week. I miss the sound of the clock striking the hour or every 30 minutes. I was in a crowd and someone asked for the time, and nobody had a watch but everyone pulled out their cell phones. I looked up and the clock was there, on to the old steeple, but it wasn't working. When did time stop?

We are all put on this earth for a period of time. Each creature on earth plays a part and has to deliver their best or others put up with the rest of their out of character nature. What's the point of having time if it isn't utilized to the fullest?

Time invokes beauty, wisdom, cooperation, organization, inspiration, peace, joy, mediation, determination, courage, or enlightenment. Do people believe church is the answer or do all the answers to life questions come out of cell phones, computers, or other technology? That is the question I had to ask myself.

In the old steeple days, they pointed to purpose. What is your purpose?

"Here is the test to find whether your mission on earth is finished:

If you're alive, it isn't!"

--- Richard Bach

Something very inspiring about steeples. I've always appreciated them and clocks are enchanting to me.

Joe Pryor - I also pay close attention to them in Switzerland and Italy! They are powerful reminders!

I don't see or hear anything like that in Flower Mound. I wouldn't mind them coming back to be a part of the American culture.

Hi Patricia,

Coming from the west, we don't see many steeples. But I was in awe visiting Europe and seeing a church with steeples in every little community. Town squares and churches everywhere.  You could feel the sense of community all around you.  Have we lost that?

Nathan Gesner - The more I read your blog posts the more interesting Cody, WY becomes, and the values seem to match my preference. There's something to be said for the hands of time that seem to be interwoven so tightly like an old fashioned quilt that won't be forgotten.

Jim Cheney - "It's a sign of the past...." Just like the clock on the old steeple in my photograph. Unless it's morning or night, light or dark,, it cannot be said what time it is because the hands don't move. There is no sound. The face is just there, as a reminder of days of yore.

Roy Kelley - that quote hit me hard too! Sometimes we need a reminder, don't we? There's something ticking inside - we just need to listen harder!

Dianne Goode - I sure hope you're right about revival. Flower Mound is a newer community and it's not due for a revival yet. When that does happen, I'm not sure if I'd find something sentimental, almost indistinguishable, or something I'd yearn for again.

Sharon Tara - I feel exactly the same way! A clock reminds me of human existence, love, time well spent, counting down the minutes, and the ones that play music are so sweet and the sound is timeless. Life changes when the clock stops ticking...

Sharon Tara - as for steeples, that's another story. To me, a steeple represents the energy or the spirit of the community. It brings the community together in all life events. It is the purpose of the community where people develop a relationship with their neighbors, God, and country. It's a symbol of trust and acceptance into a community. I love to watch old movies and when someone who hasn't stepped into a church in years suddenly appears it's as if there's a miracle and everyone feels it. A steeple is a simple recognition that a community exists and there are people you can count on in good times and bad.

Sheri Sperry - MCNE® - Have we lost that???

Traditional societies understood that culture is essential in growth and opportunity. There was a time when the church bell meant something; for example, people went to church to pray, or they stopped working. Today, people work around the clock and it's odd just writing that, because I know that when my granddaughter or your grandson grows up, they may not even know what the word CLOCK means.

Sheri, I'm afraid that when nations grow old, and we lose our past, feelings go cold.

Those old steeples are very cool.  Too bad someone doesn't repair the clock.  Maybe the noise was annoying to some of the neighbors and they purposely broke it.....  lol

Belinda Spillman - It is too bad they don't repair the clock. Perhaps they can't get the parts anymore??? Or as you say, maybe someone complained about noise pollution. Who knows!

I still think it's pretty cool too!!!

I love both steeples & clocks and especially together, Patricia! I thought you were going to say that everyone had pulled out their phones and there was a real, analog clock working up ahead of them!  I hate it when time stands still when it comes to these old clocks too - it's just so nice to see them working, isn't it?!

As for Bach's quote - until I am no longer here on this earth, I will continue to strive to be the best I can be - period!

Good Morning Patricia, your post reminded me of a Grandfather Clock my Granddaddy had, he insisted that it go to my Dad (his son-in-law) in his will because he knew my Dad would take care of it as well as he did all those years. It's fascinating to see all the parts that are in clocks that size. They're really magnificent.

I grew up living across the street from a Methodist church.  It would call to service with bells on Sunday mornings.  And, the first job I had, was in the middle of town, with yet another Methodist church right across the street.  The bells there chimed the hour.  In today's world, I have an old school house clock that chimes the hour, and the half hour for me.
