The Berkshires in western Massachusetts is a magical area all year long, but in the summer it is know worldwide as such. When June comes so do the musicians, the theater people, the dancers the artists of every milieu, and the visitors and tourists.
Last night Tanglewood, the summer home of Boston Symphony, opened. In June there are popular artists performing. The first program was at the smaller venue and was a group called The Hot Sardines. I had never heard of them before but they were a jazz group that was terrific. Tonight at the Shed, there will be a big crowd becausean outdoor Joan Baez, Mary Chapin Carpenter and the Indigo Girls will all be performing together and doing each others stuff. It should be some night.
Jacob's Pillow in Beckett opens next week too. This venue is host to the best dance companies in the world. Theater is already busy in four towns and the readings and plays at the Edith Wharton House begin in July. There are numerous museums and mansions that offer insights into their owners in touring the properties, both the homes and their gardens, and feature varied popular musicians two or three evenings a week as well. The scope and breath of choices in the Berkshires is endless.
So as they said in Athens so very long ago: let the games begin........
