What It Feels Like to Be a 3 Millionaire
Debbie has captured what I feel is the essence of being on this site.
The points give us a goal to shoot for, and along the way we learn and meet great people.
Take a minute and read this blog she has written and you will see how on target it is.
What It Feels Like to Be a 3 Millionaire
Speaking in ActiveRain jargon, points seem to be the catalyst to get bloggers interested in blogging on a regular basis. The founders were smart in putting this point system in place because as sales agents and independent business people working in an agressive real estate market, we like challenges and we like to set goals for ourselves.
When I joined ActiveRain in October 2011, I didn't know about the points and it took me a few months before I had read enough posts about it and noticed the point clicker changing by my name to really understand. Then someone mentioned when a member reached 500,000 points the ActiveRain account would be free. That seemed like a daunting number and in my mind would take years to get there.
I had prepaid for an entire year membership in ActiveRain and my motivation when starting was to creating more traffic and SEO presence which would get more business in my town of Clarksville TN. But now this point thing was getting under my skin and I wanted that free account. I set a goal.
Daily I blogged and improved my blogging skills. I learned what worked to bring in business and to interact and make friends online. Frankly, it consumed a lot of time and caused friction in my household. My husband made comments that I was addicted and I was. Our marriage survived and finally I reached the free account in July of 2013. I thought that would satisfy me.
Now the truth about how all this feels. The 500,000 was the most special. Earning something that will be free from that point forward feels good, really good. In fact, it felt great and my marketing budget appreciated it, too.
You would think the pressure was off but as some of you know, we aggressive types cannot let it go. We have to go on to the next level and mine was the 1,000,000 point threshold. Reaching the million point mark also felt great because it meant I had stuck with it and was beginning to get real business from my blog. The paydays were the real reward.
The next goal marker was 2,000,000 and that came much sooner than I expected. You see over time, the point system has changed and the points have come easier. We are awarded points for all kind of things including entering contests, hosting contests, having people bookmark our posts, reblogging a post and commenting. The Q&A section was added a 3 years ago and that too awards points. The 2,000,000 threshold came in like a lamb without anyone noticing but a couple of members. There was no fanfare, no discount to be had, just the knowledge that I was continuing on my course.
Now then it was off to 3,000,000 points. By this time, my blogging routine has been set and the benefits from blogging have been made clear. Every week someone calls or contacts me because of something I have written. In fact as I write this post, I have talked to two ladies that want to make a move and found my posts. My niche is neighborhoods and that is what they are searching for.
So now I have passed the 3 Million mark. How does it feel?
- I feel blessed to have been a part of ActiveRain for almost 6 years.
- I feel blessed to have met lots of quality people and to call many of them friends and met several dozen of them.
- I have been blessed to have read information that has been shared by my fellow AR buddies and been able to apply a good portion to the way I do my business.
- I have been uplifted with the many funny stories and inspirational posts that are the backbone of the members and their businesses.
- I have a good business and much of it is because of this platform and the push the points gave me to set in motion a course of action where I could be found.
- I appreciate that my account is free and just hope I give back enough to help sustain its existence.
If the points were to go away today, I would be okay with it. The are not the motivator for me now like they were in the early stages. My habits will not change.
But for the new members that are finding their way, not having points would be sad. The motivation I felt for those first million points or so got me into a regular pattern of blogging and have rewarded my real estate business. I am totally comfortable sharing my thoughts, ideas and information about what I do. Those that have not reached those early thresholds have great rewards waiting for them and need to pursue them.
The public yearns for good information and when we put it out there, it becomes part of the reason our businesses flourish and the momentum will continue for years to come. The Internet is forever, after all.
