It’s Your Choice

Again, it’s raining!  We’ve had more rain than we know what to do with, and quite frankly, calling Florida the “Sunshine State” right now is a bit of an oxymoron if you ask me.  As I write this blog, I am in my nightgown, sipping a cup of coffee, listening to the rain flood my yard and, of course, I began thinking about the practice of real estate and how it’s your choice when it comes to getting dressed today.

In a real estate career, it’s your choice to go into the office, to go into the field, to go door knocking or to even get out of bed.  It’s your choice to do the things your broker or manager asks you to do.  It’s your choice to use any of the nuggets you learn in training.  It’s your choice to even attend the training!

There are certain do’s and don’ts in the real estate industry that can help make a real estate agent successful or that can help tear down the chances of being successful in a real estate career.  It’s your choice to take advantage of some or to walk away from some.  That’s the beauty of being a real estate licensee.  It’s all about you and your choices.

Many people come into a real estate career without knowing about self-discipline.  To suddenly find yourself with freedom you’ve never had before can be very confusing, especially for those of you who come from a strict environment that dictated your employment hours and the tasks you performed to fill those hours.  This new-found freedom can easily be your demise if you don’t make good choices in the very beginning of your new career.

If you surround yourself with working real estate agents who are making good choices, you will quickly develop habits necessary to succeed.  For example, lead generation is a must in this business unless you have an unending source of personal referrals.  Most of us don’t and most of us start from scratch to build a following.  It’s your choice to invest in marketing tools, tightly run systems and help where you come up short.  It’s also your choice to “wing it” by talking to people and generally networking with others to get your name out there.

The practice of real estate requires you to have a working knowledge of real estate laws.  The only reason a license is required is to protect the public.  Having a real estate license doesn’t mean you know how to protect the public, so it’s your choice to gain as much knowledge as possible.  That can be done by ongoing training, professional development and coming under the watchful eye of a mentor.  Whatever choices you initially make in your real estate career will set the bar for your success.  Choose wisely – you may not get another chance.  If you need help choosing, TEAM Hughes Real Estate School is here to help.  Post-licensing contains good training and is coming up soon, so check out our website for a class near you.
