THE SCHUYLKILL RIVER...THEN AND NOW...Fran's Friday Forum...!!!

As a young boy I have great memories fishing with my older cousin, ‘UNCLE JOHNNY’...

He taught me much of what I learned about the basics of FISHING...!!!

Of course, we fished the OLD, POLLUTED, SILTY-BOTTOMED SCHUYLKILL RIVER...

It was not unusual, then, to pull in an old shoe or boot, to get snagged on an old tire, or to hook onto some piece of junk that someone disposed of using the river as a trash dump...!!! Oh, of course, once in a while we would land a slimy catfish or hefty, but elusive carp...!!!

NEVER, NEVER, would we ever consider eating any catch we took from the 'filthy' river...!!!

NOW...40 or 50 years later, THE SCHUYLKILL has been REBORN...given a new lease on life...!!!

As evidence that THE SCHUYLKILL has become a bonafide SPORTSMEN’S PARADISE. We now see BASS & TROUT, species who prefer clean water, Cormorants gliding sleekly up and down the courses, and untold numbers of kayakers and canoers enjoying the surrounding habitat from a floating perspective...!!!

I practically had to relearn the entire ART OF FISHING...even when catching nothing...As I told my youngest son, “It’s a FISHING LICENSE we have...NOT a CATCHING LICENSE”...!!!

HAVE A GREAT WEEKEND, AND IF YOU’RE NEAR A GREAT FISHING SPOT...GET OUT AND ENJOY THE CLEAN FRESH AIR AND GOD’S CREATION...!!!

What is a cormorant? Anything like a muskrat that we have here in Tennessee?
