There are two categories of agents in our industry: 

 

1. Relational: they value relationships as more important than transactions. They put the client's needs ahead of their own and think long-term.

2. Transactional: it's all about them and the commission. They find clients, close the escrow and move on, poof! they vanish-short sighted.

 

I believe our clients deserve better from us. They are making the largest purchase, sale or investment of their personal lives, we owe them what a family doctor or dentist owes their patients: Competence & Character and a relationship that supersedes any one deal. People do not refer you if they feel you do not care about them. They need to trust you.

Because I work by referral, I control my business and my economy, not a third party selling me leads. I also do not need to spend as much time prospecting as other agents do, therefore I give my clients the first of my time and they feel like they are the only client I have. They get more attention from me, because I get more referrals from them.

 

Well, that said, really my clients control my business, because they decide whether or not I've earned their referrals. This is a nice position for them to be in, they know I need to deliver the goods in a way that provides not only a good result, but through a good experience. I need to exceed your expectation, to earn your future business and referrals.

Agreed! Our buyers are indeed likely making the largest investment of their life. And they deserve our upmost assistance. My buyers settled today, and walked away with a check for $1000. That's right, instead of bringing money to the table, they walked away with a real, honest-to-goodness check. Settlement officer stated, "there's some good referrals from this transaction." It should always be about the client.

Dear Thomas,

My clients saved my butt during the recession. You need to earn and maintain that trust, but once you have it, the business becomes a lot more fun. At least for me, since I run in to people, I helped in the past. It sure boosts my mood to find out how something I was involved in helped make someone's life better.

Thomas J. Nelson, Realtor,CRS,ePro I like to think of myself as the Resource of the resources. I want my customers to think of me in those terms and they do.

When they call for advice on a vendor and you are able to make some good suggestions, they will more likely remember you when it's time to sell or buy a property. Referral is the best way to go.

Excellent post for any buyer or seller to find you online!  Referrals are a constant source of business, but it's great when a new lead finds this information online.
