Who Knew That Coleus Plants Had Blooms?

By

This year, we added a colorful coleus plant to our back porch.  It hangs from the side of the wall near our Buddha's Afro fern.

Yesterday, I noticed that it suddenly developed some spikes which are turning into light purple blooms.  Who Knew?

According to some garden websites, this is common.  Many people cut the blooms off so that the energy will be directed back to the colorful leaves.  If you let these spikes grow, they will produce seeds which you can use to grow more coleus.

I can't bring myself to snip of the blooms so hopefully I will have a bag of seeds by summer's end.

That spike almost does look out of place with the dark leaves.  I would have thought something else starting sprouting up underneath.

Belinda Spillman I like to think that all plants bloom with the right conditions. Probably overly optimistic, but it helps me remember to water them!

Very lovely plants, Belinda. By all means save those seeds so you can plant some more in your garden. Have a wonderful week!

Belinda Spillman I love the look of coleus plants but I have had no luck growing them...do you only grow them in pots and replace each year or are you able to keep them growing even in the winter to come back up the next year?

Belinda Spillman  i used to grow Beautiful Coleus Plants . I f you do not cut or pinch the middle the will become thin and straggly  instead of full and luscious . You can cut them and root them in water to replant .You do not neet the seeds .

Hi Belinda - I knew. Every year, Mary does all of the pots except one, which I do with a bunch of different types of coleus - it's one of my favorites.

Belinda,

I knew, we have a potful on our front entry with different ones, and they are beautiful.  I have a similar one in a small pot, and it has no blooms thus far!  I am going to show it your picture and make it envious.  A

I honestly can't recall if mine have ever bloomed. I pinch the blooms off my herbs, but have no idea about coleus. Just know that I love them. Yours are beautiful!

The coleus is always a nice addition to any garden or indoor plant.I love the variety of colors it comes in and the blooms. Many years ago, I was told to pinch off the flower to make bigger leaves; however, I never found out if it was true. The flower shoot is so pretty too!

Enjoy the beauty of the Coleus!
