Throwback Thursday - Stop & Think

Throwback Thursday 6 29 17

While sitting behind a Pick-Up Truck at the stop sign waiting for the truck to move the other day, I couldn't help but notice the advertising for My Appliance but it was really the woman that caught my eye in that teased up hairdo flip, big earrings and poka dotted dress.

STOP - I thought to myself, how important is it today for women to follow the fashion trends whether that is in her kitchen or appearance? Gone are the days when you'd probably see a person like the one on the back of the truck but is appearance in general that important?

Get Rich Quick - With so many Investors and advertising gimmicks on late night T.V. about flipping houses and making people rich, are buyers "Overlooking structural problems because the cosmetics of a remodel were so pretty," asks members of the TEXAS ASSOCIATION OF REALTORS®?

Buyers Beware! Offering more for cosmetic improvements without a Home Inspection Report by a licensed or Certified Inspector, Agent representation, settling to pay more for fear of multiple offers or making a bold move to compete with multiple offers more than you can realistically afford can result in costly mistakes.

Life Happens - Kids grow up. Some kids move out; some move back in. Education is costly. Jobs are never permanent. The weather is too hot or much too cold. Spouses no longer love each other. Unexpected medical bills. People of all ages get into trouble and families could face legal battles. Is offering more than a property worth today really worth it if the home you paid over value for today has to be sold and owner owes more today than the home is worth?

That signage really does make you think a bit, doesn't it. Certainly from a marketing perspective - print, TV commercials, etc. - appearance, and so often youth, really has become the focus in the advertising we see everywhere.

Jeff Dowler - I don't believe it was an accident for me to pull up beind the truck. The red and white Stop Sign was glaring at me. It put a halt to how quickly I could get to my destination, and all the while, I kept thinking about that photograph!

We simply can't be drawn into model advertising or remodeled homes without considering the whole picture of what it means to us realistically.

Thanks for your comment! May you have a wonderful day.

We see so many people buying large homes, but the homes are empty, as they are tapped out and cannot afford to furnish them. Much better to focus on what really makes you happy, family, friends and appreciating what you have and what is around you. We can be attracted by flashy brand name cars and clothes or we can have the top of the range less flashy brand name car or clothes.

This reminds me of the old commercials we used to see with the wife all dressed up while cooking in the kitchen.

Belinda Spillman - At first I thought it was a joke, but it's a legimate business! Aren't you glad women don't get all dressed up like that anymore or poof up their hair, spray it on thick, and adorn the ears with earrings just to use the kitchen! Whose idea was that anyways?????????????????

Patricia,  I like the retro-photo of the 50's "housewife" photo on the back of the appliance truck. In my mind, it conjures a much different time than what we live in today ... simpler times with hard-working small business owners focused on customer service.

Kathleen Daniels - A different time; a different attitude! I felt people were friendlier when it came to Service Repairs too. I'll never forget the times the T.V. Repair Man came over. It was as if we were expecting Santa Claus. Instead of having a big bag of toys, he had a big tool box filled with tools and test tubes. And of course, we got to see snow on our sets until the T.V. Repair Man got it fixed!

Kathleen Daniels ~ hi Kathleen... I remember those easier days of the 1950's growing up, as well. And often have more than a little bit of nostalgia for them.

Patricia I remember all too well what happened when the housing prices took a dive 10 years ago.  Many homeowers were underwater on their properties.  Anyone offering more than a property is worth needs to be very careful.

George Souto - My sentiments exactly!!! I worry when buyers are desperate and want to pay more than appraised value! History does repeat itself too!

The signage catapults the mind back to the 1950s.  Housewives, starched aprons, dinner at 5:00 pm.

Myrl Jeffcoat - There was consistency for many households throughout America when it came to dinner time. I wonder what happened to my mother's aprons? It would have been fun to make a quilt using patches from the old aprons she wore.

Patricia that lady probably had pink appliances!!  I actually saw a 50's house awhile back that was in it's original condition pink appliances and all!  Smoking hot! LOL

Anna Banana Kruchten, CRS - I never saw a pink appliance in TX but I saw pink counter tops! They were pretty popular in the 90's! The only time I saw a pink refrigerator was in Zurich several years ago. If they came out with "Smoking hot," pink appliances, do you thing the appliances would be flying out the door?

Nina Hollander - Awe, thank you! I'm a thinker and photo taker too. As a kid, I'd sit in the back seat of my father's car driving down the Kennedy Expressway in Chicago watching bill boards and making up stories. I knew how to get around the city because of the billboards and usual things I'd see along the way. That was my road map and inspiration! Plus,  it was entertaining. My favorite sign was Dad's Root Beer!
