The Sweet Nothing of Sundays 4th of July Edition
Shhhh, I’m doing Sunday, My Silent Sunday.
No Phone, No Text, No Emails, No Meetings...Silence.
Sometimes we flop all day and relax, read books, work in the garden, etc.- then go for an evening hike to get some exercise and enjoy the beauty of San Diego. Today we hiked a trail that pops us out (eventually) on the UCSD Medical Center in Science Research Park, adjacent to UCSD. There's a curious building here, it looks out of place. I've driven past this for years never noticing it; it took hiking to discover the obvious.
What is this structure located in a garden, off the main road, just North of a parking lot?
It may be because long before this was the UCSD Medical Center in Science Research Park, it was actually Camp Calvin B. Matthews 1915-1964 The Camp was an arms range (marksmanship training) that served the United States Marine Corp and this building served as the rear camp entrance sentry booth. Who knew? Well actually, beyond the US Marines, anybody that bothered to step off the sidewalk and read the commemorative plaque! It's amazing what you discover when you put on the hiking shoes instead of climbing into the car.
It's hard to see, but there is over 100 years of graffiti, most done by the guards that occupied this booth, under this protective plastic shielding. It's funny to read the musings of the 1920's sentry vs. the 1960's sentries would write out of sheer boredom at their post.
The value of a precious day off:
Recharge Sunday to Take Charge Monday!
Time away from clients; time with family & friends.
Showing up to work Monday with the best of you, not what's left of you.
Time to engage your goals, hobbies and interests.
Time to give back to others; causes and social outreach.
Time to do nothing at all!
What is La Dolce Far Niente?
The Sweetness of Doing Nothing!
Whatever relaxing and recharging means to you, this all you need to know...
no checking in with the office or it's not a day off!
