From Competent to Competent or Kaiser Marketing

By
Mortgage and Lending with Mortgage Magic

Yesterday I had an eye exam at Kaiser and this morning the first email I opened was from the OD who did the exam. Of course the letter was boiler plate but it was written in a way that it still made me feel good and it was not just a line but a full page. The letter started off with the 'glad to meet you" and then went into services and provided me with links for resources. It was a professional letter and between every word was the thought 'thank you for choosing Kiaiser'.

Once when I was visiting my regular M.D. at Kaiser my M.D. looked at my chart and proclaimed, "Oh, it's your birthday."  I commented. "You sent me a birthday card." He just laughed. We both knew that the birthday card came from the 'system'.

In marketing when you are competent you are good and success will be yours but there is a higher level: Competent to Competent. I have taken guitar lessons from the same instructor for 15 years. I am re-vising many songs (classical guitar) and reworking them so that they are closer to perfect. The teaching becomes much more focused and precise. I am going from competent to competent.

The Kaiser email this morning reminded me to go from competent to competent in all my marketing. We cannot assist every client but we can send them a card - note just a quick note but a full card thanking them for contacting us and giving an professional review of what we can do.

I think, in truth, that my marketing recently has fallen below competent but today I choose to take back to competent and then go from competent to competent. By doing that my goal is to make everyone feel good that they reached out to me and that there is a welcome door to come to in the future.

An Ah ha moment! Good job Kaiser! I went to a seminar way back when where they had said a little personal touch goes a long way...even if it's handwriting their addresses. My farm area consists of 200 and I hand write every address, on the ones where I have met the people I write a quick note "hope you're having fun with the kids this summer" or "hope Duke (thier dog) is staying out of trouble" something to relate to a conversation we had. It takes a bit of time, but I believe that the personal touch beats out the automatic. I know I will spend a few seconds more looking at something that has hand writing vs a label or typed address.

My Mother is a prolific note-writer, Doug Jones.  I can't begin to tell you how many times people have mentioned that they've received a note or card from her .. and just how special they thought it was.  It didn't go un-noticed in my own marketing.  Mom's still teaching me and leading the way ...

Great post and reminder!

Doug this is  a really good way to look at our every day tasks - take them from competent to COMPETENT.  Being that we're now in the 2nd half of the year it's time to do some assessing and taking things to a higher level. Thanks for this very intersting idea!

Doug- You know, this is a very different way to view these little things we do such as the emails. Many may scoff at the idea of these notes and birthday greetings, but they're out there. And, that's important.

Those little personal touches are lacking in today's society, but they can indeed go a long way.

Dear Doug,

Perfecting, what you already know seems like a good idea. No need to reinvent the wheel, just make it a little rounder.

I believe in KIT, however, if you didn't get a WOW from your client during your initial meeting, no amount of KIT material will affect them thereafter IMO.

Doug Jones - indeed it is a system that should be working! We can do only a bit - but if the system is in place, things do work. (And we all know few things are done by third party.)
