What Do I Write About? Think - LIFE Is A Blog Post!

When LIFE Becomes A Blog Post

I am often asked how to come up with topics for blog posts. This week in the Q&A, someone asked about writer's block - it happens; we all experience this. When this happens, I pause and begin my search for motivation/ideas.

How do you work your way past a writer's block mindset? Think of it as, 'my life is a blog' (or thousands of them)!

Here are a few ideas to get those creative juices flowing:

  • Life is a blogThere are great ideas to be found reading through others' blogs...
  • ...or reading the news.
  • Write what you've sent a client via email--an explanation of terms, etc.
  • Where did you dine out this week?  Write a restaurant review.
  • What schools are in the close proximity to your home?  Write about them.
  • What entertainment/event is coming to a venue near you?
  • What is the market doing in the communities that you serve?  Do a market report.

Oh, there are tons of great ideas...just scroll through posts of seasoned bloggers, you'll find plenty of them!  The conversation on one blog post always seems to open our minds to at least one idea and off we go to write another.  And isn't it exciting to watch bloggers grow from "I'd never waste my time doing that" to becoming an active blogger who ultimately realizes that blogging is a great source of revenue for their business.

For me, it's my daily therapy too!

On a daily basis--okay, hourly--the beginnings of a blog post come to mind while doing the most menial of tasks!  Yesterday, while cooking dinner, I thought of photographing the beautiful fruit salad that we made for dinner and writing about the fresh fruits and vegetables at the local farmer's market this week.  'Time to grab those seasonal fruits and veggies from your local Charlotte produce stand before you miss them'--yet another post idea about life here in our beautiful city, where we enjoy four seasons and the produce each brings us!

As I scroll through my phone, I am reminded of the multitude of photos that I take as I'm out and about in Charlotte - some that I've never used in my blog posts...yet!  Those photos are representative of my life...my family, my friends and my business adventures and are just waiting to be paired with a couple of paragrahps to create a blog post!

I've come to realize that in everything that we do, say or teach, we can find SOMETHING to write about!  It seems that our lives are all one long blog post (aka the book of life) - one post at a time and one chapter at a time as we progress through this life.

Think of it like this: As we log entries into our blog 'diary,' we are not only blogging for business but, we're also leaving behind the story of our lives!

Now what did you do today? What exciting, curious, surprising, earth-shattering, inspiring, teaching, life's moment will you share with the world today?

Good morning, Debe!

Every so often I do get writers block, feeling that I have already written about every possible topic I can think of.  But, as I read others' posts, I suddenly get more ideas.

And yes, life is never ending and there is always something happening.

Many times, I get a mental block that will not allow the words to flow.  When that Happens...I just think about all that happened during the day and something good comes to mind..

The idea and the content of a blog post is born every time you ask a question or get asked a question by a client, or Realtor, or assistant, or lender, or attorney, or home inspector, or by any other direct or tangential participant in a transaction. That should be about ten to thirty blog ideas a day.

Debe, this is a great idea. I spend so much time researching and writing about in-depth, rich content, I lose sight of the simpler and more memorable things about this business that clients and potential client might find amusing and human. This is an approach I need to explore more, and I bet, more people would rather read something funny and personal about the person they were considering working with.

Debe, here we are again, we are on the same page, I write about everything and many have nothing to do with Real Estate, but the buyers and sellers get to know me and want to work with me based on what I write about, gourmet food eating, drinking top shelf champagne, reading good books etc. the list goes on and on, Endre

One of my biggest problems is that I get a TON of material from my Landlords and Tenants but we are in a small community. I don't want to write something that can be tied to an individual and embarass them.

I have found that when I read posts the ones that seem to impact me the most are those that come out of the writers personal experience.

Great ideas, thanks

There is always something to blog about. But I really like the challenges of the ActiveRain contests. I feel that many of the contests have not only helped me to be a better blogger, but also a better Realtor. I really look forward to blogging and hope to keep doing it for a long time. Thanks for the ideas.

Hi Debe

I love this post! What wonderful inspiration for those moments when ideas for writing elude us...and it happens to us all now and then. The reality is there is an endless list of things to write about but sometimes we need that kick to get us motivated. And sometimes I know I think...no one will want to read about this, and I find that is NOT the case!

Good morning, Debe Maxwell, CRS there are so many different ways to be inspired to write about a topic...reading other posts, scanning through the Q&A section or just thinking about personal and/or your business life.... I'm never suffering from brain freeze and lack of topics....
