Peanut Butter n' July in Charlotte 2017

It's Peanut Butter 'N' July in Charlotte, North Carolina and throughout Mecklenburg County! We've all heard about Christmas in July and who hasn't heard of Peanut Butter & Jelly, so if you're wondering what Peanut Butter 'N' July is all about ... here's the scoop:

WBT 1110 Talk Radio and Harris Teeter Grocery Stores in Mecklenburg County team up annually with WBT radio to help benefit the Second Harvest Food Bank of Metrolina. This is the sixth consecutive year for this drive for contributions of peanut butter to help children in the Charlotte area from going hungry. Because Charlotte is such an affluent city overall, it's easy to forget that we have children hungry here, as well. And because there are no school lunches provided in the summer months, many more children go hungry during these months in the Charlotte area than most of us realize.

Did you know that because peanut butter is protein-rich and has a long shelf life, it's one of the most requested and most valuable commodities in a food bank? Through July 31st, you'll find bins set up at Harris Teeter store entrances in Mecklenburg County where you can donate jars of peanut butter. It's so easy and such a "small" donation in terms of monetary outlay. Why not make a point of buying a jar or two or even three of peanute butter from your local Harris Teeter store and putting them in one of the bins at the stores' entrances? No child should go hungry and this is one easy way to make sure fewer children in Charlotte do so.

More than 4,800 pounds of peanut butter have been donated in prior years, representing some 5,000 jars. I've already dropped off my dozen jars at my local Harris Teeter store. More to come... I make a point to pick up a couple of jars at each weekly grocery shopping trip and putting them in the bins on my way out. So easy...

Good morning, Nina --- I am am admitted peanut butter addict so much that I consider it a basic food group.   During a recent food drive, I brought in 24 jars to donate --- it was the only thing I bought at the store that day(there was a special).    I'm not just an addict...I guess I'm a pusher or enabler too...at least when it comes to PB.

Sally K. & David L. Hanson ~ hi Sally and David... I can pass on the banana, but add some cherry or bittersweet orange preserves or Nutella and I'm all over it!

Michael Jacobs ~ hi Michael... I totally get it. I dropped off a dozen jars I had purchased last month on special knowing this drive was coming. But I also know Harris Teeter will be having specials in the coming weeks on peanut butter and I'll be picking up more to donate.

Kathleen Daniels  Hi Kathleen... I promote this cause every year. I hate the idea of children going hungry in a city as affluent as Charlotte. And it's so easy and inexpensive to support this drive, no one has an excuse not to even if they donate just one single jar.

Grant Schneider ~ hi Grant... easy to donate and not expensive. $10 would go a long way towards 4 or 5 jars of peanut butter.

The Board of Realtors every year have booths at the local grocery stores collecting money and food for the food banks especially for Thanksgiving and Christmas.  One food bank worker said that peanut butter was one of the best things we can donate and it goes very fast at the foodbanks.

Nina peanut butter is cheap so there is no reason why most people cannot donate a jar or two.  This is a good cause and I hope they exceed their expectations in the amount of peanut butter collected.

George Souto ~ hi George... exactly my point. And Harris Teeter Grocery Stores, who co-sponsor this drive each year, also always have big discounts on peanute butter during July...so it's hard to argue that one can't afford to donate something.

Hmm, I don't eat much peanut butter, but I really like the taste of it and I think it is fairly healthy, so I should probably eat it more frequently, haha.

Brian England ~ I grew up on peanut butter sandwiches for lunch. As a kid it was the only way I would eat nuts. Don't have it very often now, but every so often a spoonful.
