Why I Do What I Do

Allow me to explain why I do what I do.  My real estate career began in 1983 (I tell people I was only 10 at the time).  I was a single mother receiving zero child support.  Although my background had been as a legal assistant and paralegal, I quickly found I could not continue in that profession and raise my daughters without being catapulted into poverty!  My real estate rental agent gave me a job lead with a real estate broker and it didn’t take long for me to realize I wanted to be on the other side of the desk!  Over the years I’ve thought about why I do what I do and several reasons pop up.  Before I began teaching, practicing real estate was my chosen career.  Money was the prevailing reason.  As financial restraints loosened up, it was more about the love of the career.  There was always a challenge that needed to be met, and I embraced every challenge that came my way.

One of the more immediate challenges was to get a broker license.  My broker advocated education and looked for the cream that rose to the top.  He encouraged me to better myself and I did.  To me, a broker license validates a real estate agent’s knowledge and experience, not to mention education.  With a broker license, I didn’t need to prove myself.  The license was proof that I knew what I was doing and that I cared about how I did it.  I also became active with the local Board of REALTORS®.  One agent asked me why I do what I do, and my answer surprised even myself.  I told her I do what I do to prove to myself that I know what I’m doing.  She chuckled and told me she thought even if I didn’t know what I was doing, nobody else would ever know!  (That’s charisma, folks.)

Along the way, the passion for helping one seller or one buyer at a time lessened and I found a passion to help many at one time.  From volunteering to lead Board orientations to helping with in-house training, I found my love.  Now I do what I do because of that love.  Love for the practice of real estate remains in my heart, but love for the sheer passing on of information excites me.  Why I do what I do has to do with knowing that I play a small part in someone else’s future, and that for a moment in their career, they will learn something the right way and maybe they will remember it later.

There are many shortcuts in the practice of real estate, not all good ones.  TEAM Hughes Real Estate School teaches its students without shortcuts.  We want you to learn the right things before your habits are formed, before you go through training and before someone else tells you that you don’t have to do it that way.  Register for one of our classes so you can understand why I do what I do firsthand.  We’d love to help, and we even have a broker class coming up in October.

Carrie- students can tell when their mentor/teacher loves sharing what they know with their students.  And this is when they learn.
