Opening Day at the Del Mar Races 2017 is July 19

It’s barely a week away and not too soon to plan for Opening Day at the Del Mar Races for the 2017 season.

Thoroughbred racing at the Del Mar Race Track opens Wednesday July 19 at the famed Del Mar Fairgrounds in Del Mar California, and runs through September 4th, with the exception of Mondays (other than Labor Day) and Tuesdays.

Horse racing in Del Mar

Thoroughbred horse racing at Del Mar is a hugely popular event for residents and visitors alike, from all over Southern California, and the country. Thoroughbred racing has been popular at the Del Mar race track for decades, always attracting large crowds, and plenty of famous and not so famous people. The races have always been a favorite place to hobnob with Hollywood celebrities and glitterati like Bing Crosby, Jimmy Durante, the Rat Pack, and many others, and the Del Mar Races are still a popular celebrity-sighting venue each summer, but especially on Opening Day, THE social event of the summer season.

Opening Day includes the ever-popular and unique “Opening Day Hats Contest” where you can show on your hat in the Plaza de Mexico between 11:30 and 3; participation is FREE. There are always lots of participants, with some amazing hats. Cash prizes totaling more $5000 are awarded in 5 categories, plus a Grand Prize - Most Glamorous, Best Racing Theme, Most Outrageous, Best Fascinator and Flowers/All Other.

Post time is 2 pm (4 pm on Fridays)! Gates open 2 hours beforehand – get there early, as you can expect crowded parking. Or take the Coaster Train with shuttles by the British Bus Company from the Solana Beach Train Station.

A shorter racing season (a recent add-on) runs from November 1st through the 26th (no racing Mondays, Tuesdays and Wednesday EXCEPT Opening Day November 1st).

You can expect heavy race track traffic when traveling the 5 freeway to the East, and the Coast Road to the West, as well as major side streets like Via de la Valle, especially on opening day, in addition to the summer crowds in the Del Mar area.

Hi Jeff, this would be a fun event to attend. I would especially enjoy the Hats Contest. Thanks for sharing the link, those are very detailed hats.

Hi Beth Atalay

It's a fun place to visit although I am not a huge fan of horse racing. Opening Day is pretty wild (we were there several years ago with a groupe of people through my preferred lender). The hats were amazing!

The Del Mar race track is a very special place.  It is a great place to enjoy a Sunday afternoon to get away from the heat. Very nice post to highlight this SoCal event.  My favorite time at Del Mar was visiting a Hot Rod show.  It was fabulous!

Anna Banana Kruchten, CRS  - it's worth it at least one time for fun!

Hi Jim Cheney  - It was fun, and it's hard to not get caught up in the excitement of each race. But no I don't gamble at all.

Good morning Jeff.  I went to some races just once.  Never figured out why I haven't gone back.

Jeff Dowler I go perhaps once per year and am relieved when all the horses go home safely. For some reason, I always seem to come home with a great deal less money than I went with at the start of the day.

Hi Sheri Sperry - MCNE®  - it's pretty amazing how many different events there are at the Del Mar Fairgrounds, beyond the horse racing.

Some people are pretty good with the odds, aren't they Sally K. & David L. Hanson

Hi James Dray  - well I have enjoyed it the few times I went but perhaps not enough to go more often.

Sandy Padula and Norm Padula, JD, GRI NMLS#1483386  yes, the injuries, and worse, are pretty disturbing.  Keep practicing on your betting!! LOL

It can be fun to watch horse races, Jeff. We have the Colonial Downs horse track in Providence Forge Virginia which is about a 25 minute drive for us.

Hi Jeff - Del Mar is a nice track, and a nice summer afternoon watching the horses is always fun - and sometimes profitable. My grandmother taught me how to read the racing form when I was a kid - everyone needs a cool grandma.

Hi Jeff -- I'm not a horse racing fan but that's a location that can't be beat for people-watching and having some fun in the sun.
