Whether you’re buying a condo for sale in Waikiki, a home for sale in Waianae, or a beach house for sale in Haliewa—or a home elsewhere, for that matter—you could be eligible to use a VA loan to purchase it.

Who’s Eligible for VA Loans?

Active-duty service members, members of the National Guard or Reserves, and veterans are typically eligible for VA loans. In some cases, surviving spouses and other dependents are eligible, too. If you’re a veteran, you must have received a general or honorable discharge (or any other discharge other than dishonorable) in order to qualify.

What Active-Duty Service Members Need to Prove VA Loan Eligibility

  •          A current statement of service signed by the adjutant, personnel office, or commander of your unit or higher headquarters

What National Guard and Reserve Members Need to Prove VA Loan Eligibility

  •          A current statement of service signed by the adjutant, personnel office, or commander of your unit or higher headquarters

What Veterans Need to Prove VA Loan Eligibility

  •          DD Form 214 that shows the character of your service (Item 24) and the narrative reason for separation (Item 28)

What Surviving Spouses Need to Prove VA Loan Eligibility

If you are receiving Dependency and Indemnity Compensation, you need VA Form 26-1817 and the veteran’s DD Form 214 if it’s available.

If you’re not receiving DIC benefits, you need to submit VA Form 21-534, the veteran’s DD Form 214, your marriage license, and the veteran’s death certificate or DD Form 1300.

How to Get Your Certificate of Eligibility

You’ll need a Certificate of Eligibility from the Veterans Administration, which you can apply for online here.
