If You have a Spring Fed Water Source: New Hampshire / Vermont

The idea of having pure spring water fed into your home can be an appealing one for sure, but it is not without it's potential drawbacks. Spprings can be relatively easy to contaminate, as some very nice folk's found out, that called me to do an Inspection of at their home.

Family member's of the home had been geting sick. Their Doctor said their problem had to do with the water. When I got to the home, the first thing I did was go right to the spring head, believing that would be the most likely place for the contamination to be coming from.

But the spring appeared to be in good shape, what I found out though was the water this family was getting into their home was not coming from the spring.

What I did to verifie this was, to put a plastic bag over the outgoing water pipe at the spring head. The water flowing into their home did not diminish one bit. This proved the water flowing to the home was coming from another source. This other source turned out to be a creek that the pip had to cross as it came down the mountain side.

The pipe had rusted out, and the water flowing into their home was contaminated creek water. This creek was flowing through a cow pasture, and not pure spring water.

Some areas don't allow spring water to be used as potable water, for the reason of possible contamination to the water.

Dale - This is very good information that you have shared. I think many people just drink water and don't ever think about where it is coming from. So many wells and water source have been contaminated and people don't realize it until they begin to get sick. The environmental rules are getting strict over here in Texas.

Dale, wow. What are they going to do to fix it? How sick were they and what were the symptoms? Hi Carl and Ceil. I'm glad we have strict rules. I don't like the idea of having to drink dirty water. So, Dale what are they going to do? You did a great job finding the problem! Later in the rain~Deb

Wow Dale, that's something I wouldn't have thought of. Good thing you had the idea to check the water source further. I can't imagine drinking creek water would be good for you!

I noticed that some of the smaller municipalaties close to Houston that had relied on homeowners using spring fed water for their homes are now going over to water provided by water and sanitation departments. The reasoning was health related, contaminated water supplies. You have written a good reminder for us Dale.

Another one of my friend's that I have stop by to visit and comment.

I gave them two ideas, 1. They could run PVC pipeing. 2. They could run the pipeing over the top of the creek in stead of through it, on a small bride. They did not tell me as to how sick they had goten or the symptoms. They went with both ideas.

Dale - A good rule to go by...keep an eye open for what people are putting in their streams and rivers in your general area. Have your water tested frequently and immediately if you even begin to think something may be wrong. Better safe then sorry.

Dale - Water is very important to our well being and health. Sometimes things just happen to contaminate a water source but many times people just "dump" and never think about the outcome.

We are always concerned that our aquifer in this area could be contaminaed. Several years ago a gas stations underground tank was leaking and the subdivisio below could not use the drinking water and had to truck in water for several years until they got the all clear to use the water again for drinking.

I am alway glad to see ya come by to visit.

Back in 1977 a town in North Dakota had to ration drinking water, that was being brought in by National Guard water trucks.

The town's distribution system had to flush and disinfected after the water was contamination by DDT. Two of the town residents spraying DDT had made direct cross connections to their homes.

With doing that a backflow condition occurred and the DDT was sucked through the home's piping systems and out into the town's water distribution system.
