Jasper is from chalcedony or quartz group.  It is a crystalline quartz that has ~20% of other materials.  Depends on the mineral embedded the color is determined by the composition. Many appear in multi-color, stripped. 

Morgan Hill, CA, a suburb of Silicon Valley is known to find jasper poppy stones in small quantities. Through a probate sale I even visited a property backed to a hill where the owner actually got into mining these stones.  He had all types of stone cutter, polishers.  I asked the permission to peek into the tunnel at the entrance. It was more like an air raid shelter size mining operation that owner had dug through his backyard hill. I believe a lot of diggings is still going on in town as I see them for sale on the internet. They come into different colors and shapes mostly as paper weight. Morgan Hill poppy jasper appears to include oxidized iron rich minerals resulting in striking reddish color. This occurred during seismic activities.

Dennis Kennedy, the former clean room engineer from IBM ran for mayor race. In 2002 he declared Poppy Jasper was the official City Rock. There is a meteror like rock at display inside the Morgan Hill Community and Cultural Center at intersection of Monterey Road and Dunne Avenue.

There is an 1930 small town theater on Monterey Street which served the town showing movies. After recent restoration it offers Poppy Festival.  

Each year it sponsors about 60 selective films not found elsewhere. 

Morgan Hill happens have more development opportunities than rest of Santa Clara County.
