My Cars Won't Fit In Your Garage
When selling a home, don't forget the garage. It needs to be clean and orderly and free of any unneccesary clutter. It needs to look like a car can fit.
My Cars Won't Fit In Your Garage - Advice for Charlotte Home Sellers
Along with the family of vehicles, the garage may be the place where all the things you don't want in your house go to disappear. However, when you’re selling your home, I do recommend getting rid of those things that have disappeared into your garage - with the exception of your car(s), of course!
When I'm out and about, I'm often listening to local talk shows on the radio and heard one real estate show recently recommend to sellers, "Stuff all of your clutter in the garage - women don’t care about the garage anyway!” No kidding, a real estate agent touted this as words of wisdom and couldn't be farther from the truth! This has not been my experience of late, or ever that I can recall! Women are, indeed, interested in seeing if their cars/SUVs/vans/trucks will fit in the garage. If married, they also know what the most important room in the house besides a home office is for their spouse - 9 times out of 10, it’s the GARAGE!
I have shown oversized garages that are absolutely filled to the brim with so much clutter that they look teeny tiny. In fact, they appear so much smaller than they really are, that buyers will look at it and say, “I don’t think my car will fit in this one” and they’ll move on to the next house.
Think of it like this - if you’re touring a 3,000 square foot home that is filled with large pieces of furniture and/or lots of ‘stuff’ (otherwise known as clutter), that home can look like a 2,000 square foot home to you. 90% of home buyers are not able to look beyond what they see - they don’t have a spacial sense and will walk away from the perfect home because of their perceived room sizes.
Spacial sense does not change when one steps into the garage! From my own buyers, I’ve heard:
- “We have 4 children - there’s no room to store their bicycles.”
- “Where will I store my holiday decorations? I don’t want to carry them up and down attic stairs.”
- “My husband’s company car won’t fit in here if my car is in here.” (And, indeed, it would have!)
So, now, consider this - if 90% of the population does not have spacial sense or cannot imagine how a room would look with their own furniture or ‘can’t see past the clutter,’ doesn’t that mean that only 10% of agents showing those homes can (or even try to) explain this phenomenon? You BET it does!
If you’re getting ready to list your home and you’ve received advice to throw all of your clutter in the garage, DON’T DO IT! Storage pods are a great option for homeowners thinking of selling. While de-cluttering, clean out (throw away or donate) and then store only the items that you will use in your next home. Do everything you can to declutter and whatever you do, don’t store your inside clutter in your garage. Women (and men) absolutely DO care about the garage!
