It's Peak Season for Farmers' Markets in Kansas City!

Yes it's hot and you may want to shop in the air conditioned comfort of your nearby grocery store. However, it's peak season for fresh fruits and vegetables, grown in or near the Kansas City metro area. It's worth sweating a bit to browse outdoor  farmers' markets to pick up delicious and nutritious edibles to enjoy at every meal.

We are fortunate to have so many foodstands in Kansas City--chances are there is one within a few miles of your home.  Below I have listed some of the larger farmers' markets for reference-- plan a trip early in the morning to beat the sizzling tempertures!

City Market, 20 E. Fifth St, Kansas City MO

6am-3pm Saturdays; 8am-3pm Sundays

The City Market dates back to 1857! The farmer's market here actually operates year round; it's most busy in the summer and fall. You can browse over 100 vendors here--the area's largest market. Fruits, flowers, vegetables, dairy, herbs, baked goods and crafts.

Brookside Farmers Market, 63rd St and Wornall, Kansas City MO

8am-1pm Saturdays

Since 2003, the Brookside Farmers Market has been offering organic and non-GMO food for purchase, from vendors within a 100 mile radius . Besides fruits and vegetables, meats and herbs, you'll find many vegan and gluten free items, plus a few crafts.

Waldo Farmers Market, 303 W 79th St, Kansas City MO

Wednesdays, 3-7pm

Many markets are open only on the weekends; the Waldo Farmers Market gives you a mid-week fix! Here you will find organic fruits/veggies, free range beef, flowers and herb; sometimes home made ice cream and bake treats.

Overland Park Farmers Market, 7950 Marty St, Overland Park KS

Saturdays, 6:30am-1pm; Wednesdays 7:30am-1pm.

Celebrating it's 35th season, the Overland Park Farmers Market is very popular. Not only do you have the fresh food selection, but just across the way is a street full of mostly locally owned shops restaurants to browse.

KC Organics and Natural  Market at Minor Park, 1235 E Red Bridge Rd. Kansas City MO

Saturdays, 8am-12:30pm

Another organic farmers market, offering produce and heritage breed meats plus honey, mushrooms, edible flowers, eggs and artisan breads.

When visiting a farmer's market, it's always helpful to bring your own shopping bag for purchases and plenty of smaller bills. Thank you for supporting metro area small farms!

You have to get up early in the morning to get the best looking produce at the farmers markets. Although I love fresh fruit and veggies, I admit I love my lazy Saturday mornings more. :)

Oh, we must be on the same wavelength this week, Mary! I did a post on our farmers markets too as I absolutely love popping in and grabbing something fresh for dinner as often as I can.

Hope you're having a great week!

Location to me includes having a local Farmer's Market. Your choices are many and makes it easy to settle in to this area when there are so many great choices to get fresh produce grown locally! I think it's great!!!

Farm stands, farmers markets...I can't get enough of them because the season is so short here!

I'm enjoying all the fresh veggies!

What a great post idea...well done. Love markets, unfortunately have not found an American market like any European one maybe in a few more hundred years.
